Can any of you give me a reason why the company should not have been able to make their decision, even if it was a bad or douche decision? Or are all of you just in need of some cranberry juice?

is it really this hard for you to understand the very clear criticism in this thread?

did any company publicly announce they would cut all ties or stop doing business with Haynes yet?

Given the size of the company, I doubt any huge players are really dealing with them. If they are cutting ties, it may be a business so small it doesn't matter to the media or any potential business they had may be drying up quickly. No need to announce that you won't be doing business with them if you never had before.

you mean people wishing the company burns to the ground along with all the employees, even though we don't have any details? yes, it's very hard for me to understand

Maybe he was terminated because the company was afraid their insurance wouldn't cover the bills or would have a lasting effect on everyone elses insurance costs (not too sure here, I hate the insurance industry). Either way, pretty ridiculous thing to happen to someone.

My mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2000. My dad was forced to step down from his position (I think he was head of his work team) during the time of her illness to a lower one in order to ease his work burden, but his salary was maintained. Of course this isn't the same thing that happened to this poor soul, but things like this do happen. It was pretty shitty watching someone you love die and watching those who loved her basically having their hearts ripped out.

Someone on Yelp posted the "official" apology that they issued:

STATEMENT
HAYNES MANAGEMENT
June 16, 2011

(Wellesley, MA) As a family owned company of 21 employees, Haynes Management is deeply committed to providing a supportive workplace environment for all of our colleagues. We recognize the important role each of our employees plays in our success and stability as a company.

We have a strong track record as an employer, with many employees who have worked with the company for more than 10 years. It is our practice to work collaboratively with employees during incidence of medical issues that impact the individual or members of our families.

The leadership of Haynes is confident that we followed appropriate practices in connection with recent events concerning a member of our staff. Media reports regarding the circumstances of this decision
have been inaccurate; however, out of respect for the privacy of the individual involved, we will not comment on the specifics.

In recognition of their unique circumstances and level of hardship created by his wife's illness, Haynes Management is reaching out to our former employee to determine if there is a way we can be supportive to his family during this time. This decision is consistent with our values as a family owned business and our commitment to being a responsible member of our community.

What a lame "apology". This is my favorite line:

"In recognition of their unique circumstances and level of hardship created by his wife's illness, Haynes Management is reaching out to our former employee to determine if there is a way we can be supportive to his family during this time."

Yeah, now that he is out of a job and his wife is dying of cancer he could probably use plenty of financial support. Think they'll give him that?

That was the most insincere apology I've ever read/heard. Hopefully the ex-employee gets picked up by someone soon.

Anything less than a we are really sorry and have rehired him is a) a heap of meaningless bullshit, and b) not going to do a damn thing to save the company.

Translation: we will send a fruit basket to the ICU.

ITT conservatives side with, even encourage companies to lay off people with hardships while also trying to get rid of all government help while they are unemployed.

I'm sorry for repeating myself but ... just don't do business with this company. Their "apology" only came about because of pressure to their bottom line (aka their balls in a vice).

Yep, sounds like he was paid off by Haynes. I'm sure lawyers were involved and made the most money out of the deal.

what if the story was bullshit in the first place? if this were a hundred other scenarios people would be hating on the employee for trying to make a quick buck
