As many of you know, today I am officially hired by HP Canada. Which means that I have to quit my current Lexmark job which i kept for 1.5 months. The HP manager told me to give 2 weeks notice to the Lexmark manager. I am going to e-mail my resignation letter this Sunday to him.

So here comes to the hard part: What shall i write on the resignation letter? Do i just put due to unforseen circumstance i have the leave the employ of lexmark? Or should I mention that I left for HP? What should I write to quit in a gracefull way. This is not a normal quiting cos I jumped directly to Lexmark's competitor (HP) while under the employ of them. Of course, the Lexmark manager knew nothing YET about my job offer at HP Canada. So How should i do it guys? Advice, help plz.

EDIT: this saturday, the Lexmark manager is visiting me in the store, Should i TELL HIM There or should i just e-mail him?

Why did you decide to abandon Lexmark and go to HP? That is all you have to put in your letter of resignation.

just say you've found other employment that better suits your career goals, or something like that.

It depends. If you didn't like your lexmark job, just say 'I will be quitting in two weeks" and avoid all questions of 'why' to the point where you can say to your bose: "I don't feel the need to tell you."

If Lexmark was good to you, tell them why you chose HP over them: better pay, hours, vacation, more exciting, friendly people, cool bosses, etc. so that Lexmark can see where they are going wrong and how they are loosing talent to HP (Although they are now a competitor of yours, so maybe saba . . . no, nevermind)

You're quitting after 6 weeks. Who cares what you put in your resignation letter, or even if you write one. It's not like they would hire you back anyway.

I dun really get what u mean. But HP will put me in a different location that the one i currently work at as Lexmark rep. The lexmark manager sometimes visits random stores to see how the reps are doing, so probly if i am that unlucky, he might see me lol working for HP.

are you like 18 or you just want to brag about that you are hired by HP? most resignation letter DON'T mention why you quit or where you are going. just tell them when is your last day, thats it!

1.5 months? Errr... it's not like you were a loyal employee or anything. Just say "I found something that showed more promise for me. Thank you for the experience."

You're not obligated to tell them where you're going.

Just say that you very much enjoyed working for Lexmark, and appreciate the opportunity they've given you to work there. Basically be obsequious and humble, and mention that you are leaving to pursue opportunities elsewhere.

The resignation letter matters a LOT. It's the difference between getting a "meh" reference and a great one.

Also if HP ever kicks you out it leaves the door open to get back into Lexmark if need be.

amnesiac I think I'd just leave the 6 week job off the resume entirely. No matter if the reference is "this guy can turn water into wine, his farts smell like roses, and he paid us to work here, isn't going to outweight leaving after 6 weeks.

Just give them two weeks incase you ever bump into them again. "Thanks for the opportunities and experience at Lexmark. My last day of work will be x/x/x"

You are a printer sales rep. You worked there for 1.5 months. Get over yourself. Your resignation is not going to send tremors through the corporate world.

If you are looking for them to up your pay or make an effort to keep you there, then put in all the details you'd like. If you are set to go and nothing is going to change your mind, leave out all the details and jsut put in that you will be leaving for an opportunity you can't pass up.
