i dont believe that optical necessarily gives 5.1 sound.

Optical only means a digital connection. Try connecting via analog and you will probably have results.
 
Can't connect via analog because its a home theathre surround sound system. It's not a computer speaker. Going through an optical cable is the only way to connect it from the PC to the reciever.
 
make sure your windows settings are all set to 5.1 setup.

Like in the control panel and in your sound card software.
