Check out Staples, or Fry's this week. They have a compaq system for 699 AR, XP3000, DVD burner, CD-ROM, but they do have integrated video (with free AGP), and a monitor.

MD.

interestingly enough. The latest issue of Max PC had a "build your own rig for $500, $1000 or $1500" article.

they used a celeron, 512mb, integrated video. probably not going to get much better than that.

Ye I laughed also, I would NEVER use a celeron, and if that is the best they can do, then THEY don't need to be working on computers.

Here ys go...

CPU = Athlon XP-M 2400+ $77 Newegg.com
heatsink = Basis copper bottom one ? $15 ?
Board = Chaintech SKT600 $53 shipped Newegg.com
Ram = 1 slab of 512mg PC3200 $90
Hardrive = 80gig SATA drive $72
CD-RW = FAR/or RAELLY cheap at staples, circuit city, office max, etc...
Case = generic $25
Sound and ethernet = Onboard
VideoCard = 9600 Pro $112

Run CPU at 166Mhz FSB and you could try and get some cheaper ram from a rebate deal also, just make sure it is PC2700 or PC3200.

I would strongly suggest the Shuttle AN35N-Ultra for $10 more, especially since you will be overclocking. Add another $25 for a cheap antec case for a good power supply, a $25 case generally means the PS is going to die within a year. As for the HSF, I know there are tons of good options at $15 but I don't know any offhand since that is $10 below the normal pricepoint, sorry. As for memory, don't go generic. You won't find a non generic stick for $90 anymore without dealing with rebates, but with rebates it shouldn't be a problem.

Yeah, that $500 Maximum PC system sucked. I could easily put together a nice NForce2 based system with a Barton core Athlon XP 2500+ for that price. I'm not going to do it until this topic gets moved to General Hardware where it belongs, though :)
