is hammer a new 64 bit cpu or a 32 bit one with support for 64 bit applications ?
and is K8=hammer?? :confused:

Yes, K8=hammer. Hammer is the first in AMd's line of x86-64 CPUs, meaning its got 32 bit registers for 32 bit (x86) code, as well as long integer registers for 64 bit computing. It's both, but people consider it a 64 bit CPU because thats the high end of what it supports. MS has already announced Windows XP support for it and it will be a 64 bit version of XP.

The Hammer processor is the 8th generation of processors from AMD so K8 does = hammer.

The Hammer supports both x86 instructions (32-bit instructions used in todays modern comptuers) and 64-bit instructions. This allows programs to migrate from 32-bit applications to 64-bit apps at a more cost effective pase.
