Ok, i have one 120mm fan up front, one in the back, and a 7000b alcu zalman fan running at max.

I play cs:s alot, and sometimes the screen will just ARTIFACT (like crazy, for 1/2 a sec, so i cant see anything) and the screen will go black and into powersave mode. The computer however remains on. My 6800GT doesnt get to over 80C i dont think, which ive heard is fine, and the threshold is at 120c by default.

My cpu has proper voltage i think, and it doesnt really get above 50. The other temps, like ambient, get to 43 or so from what ive seen.

Whats going on here, its never happened before. Thanks alot

Sounds like an error I used to have, though more common with ATI cards. Anyway, try setting AGP speed down to 4x. Also, you may want to log your temps and voltages and see what they were right before the crash.
 
Artifacts only appear when the video card is overheating (or your drivers are way off). Download a desktop video-load program like RTHDRIBL and run it while monitoring your temps manually. Also, just to be safe, make sure you have the latest Forceware.

Is your card oc'd? Have you flashed your 6800gt? You recently update your drivers? Not only will heat create artifacts, but they are also caused when the card is oc'd and is not getting enough voltage to remain stable. If flashed to an ultra or even an extreme, the voltage values to the RAM and gpu increase allowing you a higher oc if your temps remain in check. 80C you think? That is high IMO even with their absurd 120C threshold. Might want to also enable/disable fastwrites and see if you get the artifacts. The latest Forceware drivers never garuntees a fix or stability. Drivers for gfx cards are IMO personal preference suiting your gaming/application needs. All cards are different in different systems.
 
make sure your video card is seated properly!!

In some systems you need to check the seating of your video every so often especially with the Zalman VF700 attached!!!

Also for get about the AS5......its way over rated!!!!

If your video card is over clocked that right there could be your problem!

Some video cards don`t over clock very well!

Also you might want to update the drivers on the video card!!

Guys, i dont think its the video card. Im thinking it may be some sort of shutdown threshold thats being reached. The card does get over 80 sometimes, but that doesnt do any harm. I was playing, and i checked, and it was 83 one time, but it didnt shut off. This time it did it, i turned the comp back on again, and the video card was at 73...so i dont think its that, unless it dropped really fast.

My CPU isnt getting that hot, but i think the inside of the case is. the temps are ~45 when i play sometimes. Like, i turned on the comp after it happened this time, and the PSU was just blowing tons of hot air out, loud, and as fast as it could.

Wtf?! My GPU isnt OCd, niether do i have a third part HSF on there.

Any ways i could further cool my card? Would adding an extra (mounted) 120mm fan or two during gameplay do anything? I think exhaust is what i need. How would i go about doing this? Thanks
 
It's not necessairily overheating, the vid card can be faulty in a number of other ways.

My Radeon 9600XT used to do something like this until I forced AGP speed down to 4x, heat didn't enter into it. Try that. Could be faulty memory either in the system or on the vid card too. Run a memtest and see if it finds any errors.

Any ways i could further cool my card? Would adding an extra (mounted) 120mm fan or two during gameplay do anything? I think exhaust is what i need. How would i go about doing this? Thanks

Sounds like you could use some better exhaust. Adding an extra 120mm fan will do very little (except create more noise) for temps if your case is not exhausting well. You could get a higher cfm exhaust fan (Panaflo) and if needed even mod a top blow hole. IMO its better to have your exhaust fan at a higher rpm (moving more air) than your intake fan. Could also look at the NV5 Silencer from Arctic Cooling for your GPU cooler. This will create more exhaust for your case & not recirculate the warm air created by your gfx card.
 
The latest ATI drivers did that to my 9800 pro. I now run a rather old set of drivers and things are fine.
