Guy was in his honda, drunk, and impaled the minivan on a phone pole doing about 80.

So the guy was going about 80 (roughly, maybe a little less) and drove straight into a phone pole. Police & tow truck driver get there and the guy stumbles out of the thing and falls over piss drunk. Glad he didn't hurt anyone.

No work has been done yet (obviously it's a total). The engine has not been taken out, it's actually shoved/crushed up against/under the firewall. Also, the drive-shaft has been bent in half (I thought it would snap before that happened).

I do wonder, does insurance pay for shit if you're drunk?

Pretty sure they do but they'll massively jack your rates or drop you after an event like this for sure.
 
Yea the problem is if a state said insurance companies did not have to pay when drunk then someone they hit would be stuck with the damage to their property and body.

So yea will be covered in most cases, but rates will go sky high after.

Yeah there are high risk pools that DUI offenders can usually get into.

Shortly after I got out of college, I was making good money and had just bought a '91 Eclipse Turbo. I was paying about $2000/year for insurance with a clean record. An article in the newspaper outlined frequent DUI offenders, and spotlighted one good ole boy with 12 DUIs. He was paying....gasp....$500/year for insurance. I was pretty pissed about that.
 
Don't leave the key on the seat, someone might steal it 🙂.

I don't think being drunk helped him survive physiologically so much as he didn't get into an off-set crash. Hitting it dead-on probably saved him, because 80mph is a pretty bad wreck.

Surprised the engine didn't just fall out of it after that, lol.

Considering two recent well established car companies (GM, Toyota) have been caught knowing for years about defective designs in their cars that have caused deaths. I appreciatte seeing Tesla taking a different path.

And 'roger that' on that Honda saving that dude's life. People don't appreciate how fatal 80mph (...still seems like a high estimate, but I'll go with it) into a telephone pole would've been 20 years ago. The 'full-framed tanks' that old people will talk about, especially...yeah, good luck with the car split in half up the windshield and the engine in your lap. Best case.

That minivan really did phenomenal. As bad as the interior looks, notice how much space there still is in the footwells. The passenger compartment deformed very little.

You mean take responsibility like GM and Toyota?

You could argue back and forth that their was really a defect in the design to begin with. I don't see a gasoline powered sedan performing any different in this type of road hazard situation that the two Tesla's that caught fire expierenced. However Tesla still went back to the engineers and asked the question is their a better way to do this without totally changing the car? The engineers came back with a solution that was found reasonable to implement and it has been implemented. Seems like some other Car manufacturers could take some pointers in this area.
