And came really close to pulling it off. I usually sell stuff on eBay but if it's large I don't want to deal with big shipping costs so for my Playstation 4 Pro I listed it on FB Marketplace. I've sold a few things on there no problem. I have a rule, only cash or Zelle.
Anyways this guy does say he'll take it at my list of $300 a few weeks ago and he lives a couple towns over. I give him my cell phone and he texts me with his name. Via text confirms he'll be there the next day and he confirms he'll use Zelle.
Next day he shows up, we chat a minute and he looks at the PS4pro, says he'll take it. He's parked right in front, says he has to plug his phone in to use the screen as the phone is broken. First warning sign. But I was freezing and his car was right there so I made sure to hop in the passenger side with him. We are chatting, affable guy. Talk about some things and my guard goes down. He is logging on to transfer money and after a minute or two of futzing around says he locked himself out of the account. I had shit to do, so I was like whatever, I can take Paypal. In the back of my mind I was telling myself to make sure he uses Family & Friends not G&S but I was comfortable, partly in a rush and not being alert so I didn't. I basically fumbled the ball big time. Saw the email from Paypal come through that $300 was paid to me and I was like we are good to go.
Of course I get an email a bit later the money is on hold, then like 5 hours later I get an email the transaction is disputed as Unauthorized. I'm out a excellent condition PS4 Pro like an idiot. So I think to myself, how can I get my money.
I know I need to provide proof of him getting the PS4 and the only way is via tracking info. I borrow my friends PS4 and take photos of it being packed into a box with lots of bubble wrap, with a controller. I weigh out potatoes that weigh as much as a PS4 pro with a controller. Then I ship those in a box to his Paypal address with the cheapest option from USPS. It's only a couple towns over. Randomly, that same night, without me saying anything, Paypal says the dispute was settled in my favor. But I hold on to that tracking slip.
A weeka and a bit later, I get another dispute email from Paypal from the same transaction. This time they ask for me to make my case.
So I provide the tracking number, then I advise this is a scam, please look at the buyers Paypal history - I provided my eBay account with 100% positive feedback, I provide a link to my Swappa account where I had just sold a phone that was shown as done right. I also provided them with screenshots of our FB messenger chats, told them that he texted me from his number, which I provided, so how could it be an Unauthorized transaction? I also said I could provide screenshots of our texts and also photos of the boxing of the device, as I do with all expensive electronics.
Two days later case is resolved in my favor.
Fuck that guy and I will never let my guard down again. He did get a PS4 Pro but he paid $283 more dollars than he thought he would, but he got some Yukon gold potatoes for his trouble.
