And you thought YOU were throwing YOUR money down the SH!TTER!!

Funny, he-he. One could buy what - a new car for that money, and all the frigging time he had just been crapping in the tank!!! And didn't have any idea of that. Though when he flushed the crap goes away - no, it's here to stay. That's quite rude, but what else comes to mind?

1. Grab a hose and hook it up to the septic tank.
2. Make fertilizer for sale sign.
3. Put sign in front yard.
4. Wait for customers to pour in.

$17,000 spread over 24 years = $59 a month on average

At the 20 year mark, assuming 8% interest, that would have been almost $40K.

I'd be pissed as hell.

Our septic tank went 10 years before we had it pumped, and then it was only about half full. Leech lines get rid of most of the liquid, and then it's transparant compared to sewers. So it's fairly easy to not notice.

Damn. When we had a septic tank, we pumped it like every 6th months. There was no need, but my mom wanted it all out of there. There was a house 2 doors up thats septic tank "door" was underneath there stairs. They got it pumped whenever it would overflow. Not a night site or odor. Everyone gave them sh-t though 🙂

6 months!!
Are you sure you had a septic system and not just a holding tank?? Some parts of the country, what comes to mind is the florida keys, require a holding tank if you aren't on a city sewer.

As others have said, the usual reccomendation is 5+ years, and a well designed, properly sized, and properly used system can easily go much longer, although if you let it go to long you'll start sending to much solids down into the leech field which clogs it up (and you start getting soft smelly spot in your yard).

Of course, people who make their money by pumping your tank will tell you lots of horror stories and try to convince you to pump it every other year or so.

I was young, so I could be mistaken. We've had sewers for like 10 years now...

Anytime our septic tank is getting full I just grab a small shovel & hose and spread it across the lawn. The neighbors all complain but we got the best lawn in the neighborhood!!

dont u live in an apartment complex??

arent you a retard ?

The day after we signed the papers to move into our house the septic overflowed and started running down the driveway. It turns out it hadn't been installed correctly and needed to be replaced, I guess it wasn't draining correctly. Anyways, the previous owner felt terrible and paid 2/3 of the cost to replace it.

I asked my mom and she said she had it pumped twice a year. Our property is not that big since its NYC...

IN NYC ... i'm very suprised that there are any homes in NYC that have a septic system of the type we're discussing as a septic system generally needs a largish leech field ... for my 3 bedroom home, I don't recall the ft^2, I'll look it up when I get home. But it's probably about the size of your total lawn at an avaerage suburban home + a 1000 gallon septic tank, and has to be some minimum distance from any structure (30' ?).

$17,000 in sewage bills paid for NOTHING!

So he's taken them to court since they won't give the $$ back.

Sorry no link, just heard this on the radio.

Thats alotta $hit.... no $hit meant...

My parents' house has a septic tank since they live far away from the sewer system. The house was built about 6 years ago and as far as I know they haven't emptied it yet, and for 5½ years the place was inhabited by 4 people. If this guy bought a house originally built for 4 or something and he is the only person living there, or maybe just him and someone else, then I could easily see him going 24 years without a pumping. And remember, just because the tank might have problems before then doesn't mean it'd stop working. He might have been puzzled by a sudden sufur smell in the area for the past 3 years; you just don't know. 😛
