guy offered me a PS2

With no tray cover(that has PS2 logo) and says it clicks when first turned on but reads games fine. Any PS2 gurus out there know what the click could be from? He's wanting to trade it controller, memory and hookups for my 80gb SATA drive. My guess is he was doing some cog swap.

Either way will have him ship first to make sure it works if I trade.

My guess is the motor on the drive isn't perfectly level, or the tray could be a little bent/warped causing the disc to hit it as it spins up. Either pressure from the spinning or centripetal force then causes it to not hit any more once it's at speed. So that's my 2 cents.

I wouldn't do it... it sounds like the clicking noise is something to do with the drive. Could be bad down the road.

The clicking noise is the height adjustment gear for the laser making a full circle. Once it gets past its highest point, it drops back down to the lowest point again, causing the click. Nothing may be wrong right now, buy you might be plagued by the DRE (Disc Read Error) in the near future. I wouldn't do it.

Well that sounds bad 😀. If it comes with ethernet adapter I might trade since I had plan on putting the games I bought on it and running them from the HDD. Then the laser will be used very little.

Is there a fix to this other than changing the laser?

You can get XBOX/PS2 for cheap... around ~80?

Just sell your Seagate + MCE

true if I look around hard enough I could find one for that. But if I could get a PS2 out of the SATA Seagate then I could trade the MCE for a 80gb or so HDD for the PS2.

There was some type of adjustment that Sony did. Some could not be adjusted and were replaced under warranty. I would just go on eBay and buy one. Or ask a friend if they know anyone who is selling their PS2.
