So im sitting here at the comp with my windows opened (blistering heat outside) and i hear this funny revving sound coming from just across the street, it sounded like a car revving its engines but it was such a weak "buzzing" sound i couldn't tell.... Low and behold, i look out the window and the guy across the street from me has his Civic parked out on the driveway, he appears to be doing some work on it because he has the 2 rear wheels purched up on risers and the hood is up....

I swear it was a dust buster at first, you know how when you press a the button on those things they make a revving sound, same sound coming from the Civic, LMAO! :D

Wish i had my cam with me, id take some pics...

When I first read the title of this thread, I immediately thought, "Must be a Honda." Lo and behold, it was! My friend has one, a Civic too, and when he revved his engine I told him it sounded like a vacuum cleaner. I didn't know car engines made sounds like that. I expected something with a little more bass. He didn't really seem to care because he gets like 35mpg...

Four whole cylinders baby!

Yeah, if only my freakin' webcam (it has a onboard mic) was working i would have stuck it out the window and caught the sound byte and video for everyone....

on an unrelated note: Damn you M$ for creating WinMe

man why does ever person in here seem to bash japanese cars? i mean yeah they might sound a little weak, but the performance they can get out of them is amazing. They don't need loud 5.0 engines to make a car powerful. Their technology is far more economical and powerful than most LOUD hot rods with a huge engine that doesn;t perform as good a smaller japanese car.

People bash Japanese cars for many reasons. I can't speak for anyone else but I will list the reasons why I hate Japanese cars.

1. They are almost all FWD. This is fine for driving to the grocery store and is great in snow/rain but SUCKS for any kind of performance driving. FWD cars understeer or spin out, while RWD can be controled and adjusted much more easily. They also tourqe steer under hard acceleration.

2. They sound like a vacuum cleaner. Enough said

3. They are usually short on tourque. Most Japanese cars, even ones with good ammounts of power like the Honda S2000 and the old Mazda RX-7 make for less tourqe than any American V8. The cars have no usuable power below 3000 to 4500rpm which also sucks.

4. They are small. I am 6'1 and not too large (185-220 depending on how in shape I am) and I find many Japanese cars to lack head/leg room. If I sit up straight my head sticks out of a Miata and I can see over the windshield. That is just sad.

5. Japanese car makers copy the styling of European cars and than butcher it. I do not appreciate the lack of originality. To be fair Honda and Mazda do not do this too much but Lexus are horrible having totally copied the Benz E-Class for the GS.

Let us not get into the rut of thinking that ONLY four cylinders means a Weak engine.

Acura NSX. Party machine. Rip a hole in most cars with larger engines.

Lotus- Need I say more?

And for a real world example, I have an 18' Bayliner with a Ford 270 in it. 4 cylinders and 180hp. That's more horses than my '85 Toy Supra (inline DOHC 6cyl) had. It had 171hp I think.

Just depends on what you do with it ;)

And I'm pretty sure that the NSX doesn't sound like a dustbuster :D
That guy just needs to take his car to a mechanic instead o' jury-riggin' it. Never know. He might've thought that sounded Coooooooool.

First Of All ...

1. There is nothing wrong with FWD and it's helluv a lot better than not being able to go up hills in the winter.. not to mention better control in the rain.. and
ALL CARS CAN SPIN OUT IF YOU DONT KNOW HOW TO DRIVE THEM.

2. I'd rather hear Vaccum noises.. then hear American Cars and their squeaking noises and crappy engine noise..

3. Japanese cars ( Honda's ) have a High Redline for a reason...

4. I don't know what the hell you're talking about.. but I dont consider.. Land Cruiser, LX470, Sequoia , Highlander Small... unless you are big as Fat Bastard on Austin Powers 2

5. The GS Looks nothing like the Mercedes E-Class... The GS looks helluv a lot better than the E-Class... and.. the only noticable european look that the Lexus has is the Altezza lights...

since we're all making generalizations here i might as well say that most, if not all japanese cars are FAR more reliable than their American or European counterparts.

Aye, I'm dead sexy! Once you go fat you'll never go back!
:p
Anyways no car is perfect. All I know is I got a fairly decent car with everything I want for payments I can afford. While one should get what makes them happy, the environment asks you to think about it too.

ok, here is my rant for a Japanese car...

first of all...american cars can suck it. they are unreliable, they are crap!

lets see...
Subaru WRX STi 285 HP 265 Torque. 0-60 = 4.7 PRICE=$30,000

Ferrari 550 ? HP ? Torque. 0-60 = 4.2-4.7 PRICE=$300,000

american car 100 hp 900 torque. 0-60 (after fixing the leak in the radiator...) = 9+ price = just as much!

end rant.

couple of comments:

the guy that said hondas don't have usable power under 4500 RPM was incorrect. If you are thinking the only powerful hondas made were based on vtec systems (where it really kicks in around mid 5thousands), you're wrong. if you've driven a prelude Si or better you know its a torquey car with plenty of power under foot from low to high rpm's. it doesn't have to 'wait' till 5500 rpm to kick in. The new RSX by Acura is VTEC but an improved version that supposedly kicks in at 3300 RPM. I believe it goes all the way up past 8000 RPM so you have plenty of power for most of the power band.

About handling, I don't know where you get off saying RWD is better. Thats not necessarily true at all. for straight line drag racing, I have seen myself that RWD cars fare better because over 600 hp and you can brake an axle on FWD cars. But most people of domestics or imports dont drive 600 hp cars anyways. other problem, more common, is traction. the tires will sit there spinning for some time before launch on FWD cars.. but when you take curves, the handling is much better on most hondas than camaros or firebirds or stangs. My friend even talked to a cop who a highway patrol cop (Camaro) who says that in the past when ppl have tried to run away from him, he can take the modded hondas on straight acceleration, but when they come to turns, the hondas run circles around him.

About the guy that thinks the GS looks better than Mercedes E.... get off the crack man. I like Lexus, and of course Honda, but Mercedes is the best car manafacturer out there period. The mercedes styling is timeless thats why you have beauties like the 300 SL Gullwing and countless others become treasured collectors items. The E class is an extremely attractive car, much better looking than the GS. The back of the GS looks cut off.

japanese car = environmetally friendly...

Civic, Corolla, Sentra, all have 30 above local mpg, Civic HX gets even up to 44 in freeway.
not to mention Prius, Insight and all those hybrid cars...

yes, American Cars are fast, (those damn Mustangs), but I would take an integra or MR2 anyday.
