Guy got fired at work today

One one hand, he created all sorts of problems and work for himself so he could avoid doing real work. He's been there longer than anybody else in the store, yet had the worst sales performance, because he didn't ever bother. He was constantly setting up the TVs to record shows he wanted to watch (Star Trek, West Wing, etc.), when we're supposed to run demo DVDs only on them. He was late every day by at least 10 minutes, sometimes an hour, and did whatever he could to get fired it seemed, so he could go on unemployment and play Everquest for the next few months.

But on the other hand, he was a cool guy to hang out with, and having worked daily with him for three or more years now, I consider him a friend. We annoys me sometimes, but it's over minor stuff usually, and he was at least reliable when I needed him to be.

Apparantly he got into an argument with our district manager last week during a store visit, and today our manager was told to "fix" the problem, since he's done nothing worthwhile the past few months and keeps pissing our DM off. So in walked our manager, said "Sorry you're gone", and with a smile on his face he went home.

Guess he got what he wanted. Why should it bother you more than it bothers him?

Why WOULD he care about a pissant retail job?

I know if I worked one of thoes jobs, I would make his slacking look tame.

I don't mind the job at all, I make decent cash there too, average week I pull anywhere from $15-$20 an hour, much better than what I'd be making as an entry level tech support person :p

But yeah, while on the company medical plan he got a stomach staple operation, basically all but paid for by the insurance company. He just took his vacation about 2 weeks back, so he got paid for all that, so I don't think he's too worried.

No I hear ya, I've worked all kinds of jobs.

In thoes positions the one who slacks the most and still keeps his job, wins.

yup I agree I remember my days at radio shack....had my boss trained to the point where he wouldn't even both telling me to do shipments or anything, as long as I kept my selling numbers hi I could do anything I wanted. (mostly included surfing the net and playing xbox) was top in sales for the store , mainly because everyone else was always being told to do shipments and other menial work :D

Ended up quiting after my manager quit and didn't feel like going thru the training process with another guy.

if the store manager was keeping a detailed record of all this employees trangressions... late, not performing, bad attitude... the fired guy most likely will not be getting unemployment.

Ummmm....getting "fired" = no unemployment.

Seriously - you need to provide a letter from your previous employer showing that:

A) You were actually gainfully employed
B) ...and layed off through no fault of your own (this is an important point)
C) ...with paystub or W2 information as proof of 'A'

I'd say - if he really got fired - he'd better start looking for another job ASAP. Unless he's got friends at the unemployment bureau...

I never said I worked at RS, and legally I can't say such a thing :)...I can say that TSPs were a part of my job though. Or RSSPs. And RSAP. So yeah.

Either way we did have such records, and his sales were miserable at best, wireless hitrate in the 50s, DPT under $25, DPH under $80, stuff like that.

That'd require the company to actually spend the time to make sure he doesn't get unemployment. You have to realize that our company doesn't care that much. He was basically laid off, and if the Unemployment Office contacts our store we'll likely tell them that we simply didn't have space for him and he was downsized. Our company rarely fires anybody, they simply don't schedule them anymore, it's pretty weird actually.

Ah, well, he lucks out, then.

He'll still need a letter stating that, though. Unemployment isn't just handed out to anybody who walks up and says "I was a corporate CEO making a cool $mil a year and was just laid off, whaddya got for me?"
