Too bad this will only stave it off for about a month.

In all seriousness, I gotta agree wit Ducci.Your life is saved because you played the Wii? For realz? Come on.

You two should volunteer for a crisis hot line for a while. Sometimes people just need a little bit of joy to keep on going.

Repost or not, a big  to that guy if it's true.

Also, the guy said several times in that thread that he wasn't implying that his Wii is what kept that woman from committing suicide, and that it probably had very little effect compared to counseling and drugs. Other people came in criticizing him for making that claim (which he never made).

I assume you've never had to deal with someone who's experienced severe depression in your life? The fact that it's a Wii is inconsequential, it could be just about anything (a movie, a book, music, pictures, all manner of things), but when struggling with depression, even small things can make a big difference. It seems silly, but trust me that it is anything but.

Kudos to the person in the article.

I haven't - hence the "I can't imagine" part. If I did, I imagine I could imagine. Imagine.

I'll admit that empathy isn't my strong suit - in particular when it comes to suicide - I'm of the mentality that regardless of how shitty your life is - chances are it's better than, you know, death. I think I would be a terrible suicide phone operator.

"So you're thinking of killing yourself? You, uh, want a Wii? Oh, you have one already... And you still want to kill yourself? Really? Hmm, that's all they have on the card, here, so, uh, yea, this is awkward... "

Also, "Too bad this will only stave it off for about a month" was pretty funny.

I met a friend in college that had Lyme's disease. The disease basically exasperated several conditions. He was severely depressed... still is. Takes medicine for it. I don't know how many times I had to just sit and talk with him because he doesn't know what to do and feels completely out of control about everything. Yes, I was worried that he was suicidal... but the underlying issues were not going to be solved by buying him something.

Now, I'm no psychoanalyst or anything, but I'm guessing a lot of people who are depressed generally feel better when people are there to support them and help them. Maybe this Wii was her symbol of support from other people, so yes, it could have helped and probably didn't really matter that it was a Wii... like you said.

I doubt it was a symbol of any kind. This woman probably enjoyed the company and friendship of playing the Wii with her daughter and friends, that being the comparison to your description of just being there for your friend and talking to him. If she finds herself alone, depressed, and with a Wii, playing a little bowling isn't going to help her at all.

Yeah, I had a friend years abck that was about to commit suicide. I helped signed her up with a local play, and that is what kept her going on. She didn't want to let the other actors down, and she felt like she was a part of something. She is doing really good right now.

Sometimes people just need an extra little push.

The only thing I see that is complete bs, is the bs you spell out in your posts on a daily basis here at Anand.

not that at all, it's simply that a depressed suicidal maniac will not be occupied by a wii for very long. She needs to be baker acted and kept under surveillance 24/7 or the next article will read... "old lady commits suicide after playing mario galaxy."

and I really don't think Nintendo needs the bad rep.

He most certainly did:

With folding@home, the PS3 might one day save many lives. Right now, I know my Nintendo Wii IS saving one life.
