Repost. I got bored last time and didn't watch the whole video - what did the cops do?

They're not obligated by federal law to accept the pennies, but someone commented in the other thread that they may be obligated by local laws.

Not arguing, but why are they not obligated? "All debts, public and private" I thought.

I haven't watched the video, but isn't it illegal to not accept pennies as a legal tender? I am surprised they refused, considering they are state/government??

IIRC it was a private towing company.

Link
This statute means that all United States money as identified above are a valid and legal offer of payment for debts when tendered to a creditor. There is, however, no Federal statute mandating that a private business, a person or an organization must accept currency or coins as for payment for goods and/or services. Private businesses are free to develop their own policies on whether or not to accept cash unless there is a State law which says otherwise. For example, a bus line may prohibit payment of fares in pennies or dollar bills. In addition, movie theaters, convenience stores and gas stations may refuse to accept large denomination currency (usually notes above $20) as a matter of policy.

But, most local/county goverment regulate non-consent tows and make them accept cash and at least one major credit card as payment.

...you could have just clicked the link to the other thread. This was discussed there.

They are private contracted, hence the police showing up and making them take it.

Regardless of the actual legal status of their policy, that was a funny video.

I do recall this being discussed a while back when Apple (or maybe it was AT&T?) started requiring all iPhone buyers to use a credit card. They wouldn't accept cash.

Yes, they are. Stores are not obligated to accept pennies for products since it's not a debt. The tow place is.
