Guy gave me a 3G 20GB ipod... what do i do?

So worked on a guy's computer today. He mentioned he had a Nano because the 20gb ipod he had had stopped working and offered it to me. I said it was probably the battery and that I would take it.

Got it back home. Plugged it in to roommate's cord. It would charge, but won't hold a charge more than 10 minutes or so. Reset it, updated the software, still wouldn't hold charge.

So now... what should I do with it? Order a 3rd party battery? Order a battery from Apple? If I do that, will it be the same unit or is there a small chance for a newer model? This would be my first ipod. A little out of "the know"

Should I give the unit back to the guy explaining that it is much easier than he thought to get the thing working?

I need answers people.

And cheese. I need cheese. Yes. Cheese.

Would appreciate the rationale used for your vote, as well.

Tell the guy the truth about the battery and offer him the nano back. If he accepts, ask for cheese.

He already has a nano. He gave me his old 20gb that hasn't worked for him for ages.

First, try this though. Plug in, let it charge full. then unplug and plug it in right away to force it to charge again to full. Repeat like 5 times.

I would keep it. Sounds like the guy gave the 20gb ipod to you because he likes his ipod nano and doesn't want to look at the 20gb again, even if it is fixed.

Since you've already mentioned that it was probably a battery problem and he has gotten his nano, just change the battery and do with it what you like. No harm will be done.

I voted for other. Get a stereo for your car that is compatible with one of the digital ipod connection boxes... pioneer or alpine... get the box... then fill the ipod with your favorite ill-gotten mp3s, plug into your car and don't worry about the battery, since it will be plugged in to your cars power the entire time you are using it.

Good choice.

Hey there. 🙂

buy a thrid party battery. If it works and you don't want an Ipod, sell it; if you want an Ipod, keep it.

The only real delima here is 3rd party or OEM battery.

Actually, I "could" also give it back to him and have him submit for the battery settlement as well.

Not sure what's best. Might just buy a battery, probably 3rd party because of cost. Have seen an 1100mah battery that would be nice.

Would be nice to have a voice recorder for rehearsals and things.
