You don't live in CA do you? Living in San Jose would cost him a significant amount more than commuting I imagine.

He's CLEARY an idiot because he's been working for Cisco for 17 years and DID not buy a house closer to his workplace before the run up in housing prices... If he would have purchased a home in the Bay Area between 89 and 96 not only would have he had saved all that time/money on commuting but what have seen the value of his house double...

This guy sucks at the life. 15 hours away from his family eveyday... I guess all he does at home is sleep.

Commuting from that far is stupid. I agree.

Commuting from Hollister or something would be more reasonable.

But what is the value of his time spent on the road and away from his family or relaxing?

I would raise llamas on my ranch so I would not have to drive 7 hours a day. The difference between that and a cicso salary minus gas costs can't be that different.

So hes basically saying he's doing this for his family that he never sees? Yeah "Daddy loved me... I never saw him and he wasn't around when we needed him, but he said it was "for us". As presented, this guy looks like an idiot.

I used to work with a lady that had been commuting 136mi each way for 15 years:confused: Same type story, her husband was a rancher out in the middle of nowhere and she drove into the city to work.

Have you been to Mariposa? It's up in the mountains near Yosemite. I'm sure that the weekends are very relaxing there and maybe he likes it a lot there and doesn't want to live in a big city and wants his kids to have a smaller town life. Think about that?

Or I don't know, move out of California if you can't find a suitable place to live within 3 HOURS of your job.

This guy is an idiot, but it's his life so whatever.

At 50 weeks of work a year, driving 1,860 miles a week, with an estimate of 30mpg, that's 3,100 gallons of gas/year. At $2.00 a gallon, that's around $6200 a year. :Q

Still cheaper than buying a house in Silicon Valley!

Home prices are so overblown in the area that people like him are the norm in the SV.

gas is more like $3 a gallon, so total cost is around $9300 a year. If he rents a room in an apartment he probably would shell out $800 a month, for a total of $9600 a year. He can commute back on the weekends. I would probably do this to safe my sanity

Hell, i would have bought a second home in the early 90s when housing was cheap. You're already losing 7 hrs a day, so how often do you really see your family in the workweek anyways?

5am wake up
8:30am get to work
5:30pm leave work
9pm get home
10-11pm sleep

1-2 hour with family? He must not like his wife much.

If he's spending 7 hours in his car every workday, that's about 2100 hours a year, or 87 days per year, or almost 3 months per year.

Assume he's awake for 16 hours per day, that's 5840 hours per year, he's spending about 35% of his awake hours in his car.

186 miles should take about 3.5 hours, if you consider traffic and stop and go city and rural/town driving. The stretch in between can be faster but the city driving and the actual commute should be about 3.5 hours.

Not to mention the $1000 a month that he has to save up to buy a new car every two years or so.
