I swear I looked at some 290x reviews that actually showed it using less power in Uber mode because the fan was keeping the chip cooler. I'll have to look.


TPU was the closest thing to that afaik, their graphs show barely any different in power.

I made a post commenting on it, but I can't find it.

We would need to see the clocks and what FPS it is pulling to determine if that fan speed/voltage is worth it. Hard to tell just from that chart. It could be with a huge overclock and a boatload more FPS.

The only thing they say about the 70°C result is that they left the power limit alone and set the temp limit in CCC to 70°C.

After that negative attention, PowerTune kicks in to do the job it's supposed to do. The technology makes its adjustments so quickly that it's difficult to express average power consumption using one number. There's a lot of variation, and the reading changes based on several factors.

Because we can't be as objective as we'd want, we're providing a range instead. To achieve this, we left the power limit alone in CCC and lowered the board's target temperature to 70 degrees Celsius. The resulting cooling performance is about on par with what AMD’s partners offer on existing cards in the same thermal class, giving us a preview of what they might achieve with their own cooling solutions and R9 290X.

Power figures between 185 and 218 W are pretty darned good in the ultra-high-end segment. In light of these results, I think we can forgive the idle numbers we recorded earlier.

But this doesn't really explain to me why the power usage went up with a lower target temp. Unless the fan really is using all that extra power, which seems possible but I can't imagine a small blower fan uses an extra 33W.

The more I look at it the more I think Tom's has no idea what they are doing...

Trying to read it again, I think now that both of these numbers are at a 70C degree target, the lower number is what throttling to keep the 70C number does and the higher is the peak number when it's not throttling to maintain 70C.

So it doesn't use a ton of power at 70C target in gaming, but it guzzles power in GPGPU workloads. Interesting.
