Gunsmoke' actor James Arness dies at age 88

Former "Gunsmoke" actor James Arness, who played Marshal Matt Dillon in the western TV series for 20 years, died Friday from natural causes, according to his website. He was 88.

A giant. Almost literally.
There was a time almost the entire nation paused to watch him in Gunsmoke, and he was still the best "Thing".

I just heard this 5 minutes ago. Some of my earliest memories of TV include him and Gunsmoke. A long life well lived despite multiple personal tragedies.

Sad day. He was a great actor. Many of us grew up with him as Marshall Dillon...and Amanda Blake as that dance hall prostitute, Miss Kitty.

(always seemed ironic that she died from complications of AIDS)

I wonder if my mom and dad even had a TV in 1955?

Lets not forget the others that made Gunsmoke great: There was Dennis Weaver as Chester Goode, Festus (Ken Curtis), Doc Galen Adams (Milburn Stone), Sam Noonan (Glen Strange) the bartender, Louie the town drunk, Burt Reynolds as Quint Asper the blacksmith, Amanda Blake as Kitty Russell, Buck Taylor as Newly O'Brien, and others. The list of stars on this show is also tremendous.
