Mark this one in the idiots in the US category, but I wanted to share this as it happened local:

Last week one of my wife's employees called and said her sister had been shot and killed in her home in a town near us and she needed to leave work. The next day we saw in the news, that the dad had shot her and been charged. We assumed at this point that it probably was an accident as you hear about them all the time.

Later we find out from her the whole story as told from her father:

Her sister, boyfriend and her father were sitting down to dinner. They had been BSing and poking each other with forks (don't ask me, supposedly no alcohol or drugs involved). At some point the father gets up, goes and gets a gun, holds it to her head and jokingly says "oh yea, well what if I blow your brains out?" and then pulls the trigger. Surprise: it was loaded, safety off. Yeah.

Wow. Yea OK kids. Don't do this at home. Really.

That's a terrible story if true.

I have no problems with that father going to prison for the rest of his life.

We have 320'ish million people in the US. I'm sure he's sorry and feels terrible, but I'd rather one less moron capable of manslaughter be off the street.

What about that is funny?! If someone did that to me, and the hammer fell on an empty chamber, I'd beat them within an inch of their lives. It would also be the last time they saw that weapon, because it would either be mine, or destroyed.

Last year we had some city official shot his wife in the buttock with a 7mm deer rifle. He said it was an accident, the police actually believed him.

Yea I don't know the guy or the sister who died, so I couldn't say. It's just something you don't do in any situation unless you plan on killing something.

Doing something that dumb is just asking for a tragic accident. I want to be hard on the father as someone who believes in gun rights and hates to hear about such a stupid unnecessary loss of life that was so preventable with just a touch of common sense. But if that version of the story is real, I'm sure he is already beating himself up worse than anything or anyone else could. Probably not a happy Father's Day for that family.

He broke two major gun safety rules:

1) treat every gun as loaded
2) never point the gun at anything you aren't willing to shoot

Sad.

This. What a fucking moron. Anyone can be a moron, unfortunately. What was that story about that SEAL who shot himself in his head showing off his gun to some chick? Think he had been drinking, though.

god damn. what a fucking idiot.

I just don't get this. why would you do this? its not funny and not a joke. Like lxklr said if someone did this to me or someone i know i have to admit i would do my best to beat the living hell out of them. I would also do my best to destroy that weapon and make sure they never own another.

glad he is charged. i want him in jail with pictures all over the wall with his daughter and what he did.

That had to be slightly awkward for the boyfriend.

Not to often you have a girl blow a load all over you, especially if it was her father that made it happen.

Ah, the old hold the gun to your kid's head trick, always makes for some family fun.

Slightly awkward? Think horrifying and all kinds of other bad emotions.

There's a hundred things I want to write, but I can't figure out which ones I should, and which I should not. I want to say something though.

OP's story isn't a cautionary gun story, its a people cautionary tale. Rule #1, all weapons are treated as though they are loaded.

Wish it wasn't true. I can post links to the articles about it, but as of yet they haven't released the details to the extent that we were told them. As I only know the girl that works at my wifes store I can't really say if what the father said is truth or not, granted, no one has said one thing about the boyfriend and if his story is the same.

What's more is when the daughter went and talked to her dad he ended the story with "she's in a better place". Wow, did that piss her off.

P.S. Explain to me why I would even...
