It's too akward looking and probably inaccurate. Give me an AR-15 in .308 for long range targets, a matte black 12-gauge for close-up defense, and a H&K .45ACP for concealability!

WOW, with slap a duckbill on that baby and who needs to be accurate? I read SEAL stories in Vietnam where one tema member would burst into a room filled with NVA and have it cleared in 10 seconds with a regualar pump action. You could take out a small army with that thing.

"...Give me an AR-15 in .308 for long range targets..."

Jumpen, the .308 version is called a AR-10. Actually the AR-10 came out first, so really the AR-15 is just .223 version of the original .308 AR-10.

Thanks Dabanshee, I knew that but didn't mention as I didn't know if people had heard of an Ar-10. Btw, Armalite makes some nice AR's in .223, .300, and .308.

Why are people so enamoured with the .308 as a sniper round? it's not even a good sniper round. It lacks proper mass to reduce crosswind drift and lacks down range "punch" The .308 is just an "all around round" that as been standerdized by NATO to be widely used across many (allied)lands. If you are going sniping, why not use a good high velocity high mass round like the .50 or .375 h&h? Police swat teams like the .380 because of their enviroment, within cities and between buildings there is no need for long range capability hence the .380 will do. I just don't understand why people think it is "THE" sniper round.

eia430,
I don't know how SWAT and other non-military snipers decided on the .308 as their sniper round, maybe because it was already a proven round? It does not excel at everything, but it is still a fine anti-personel round out to ~1000 meters. Sure it doesnt have the range or power of a .50, but a .50 also weights 25+ pounds and still has to have a huge muzzle brake (which increases the chances of your being spotted) in order to be tolerable. The 2 serve different purposes and both excel at they are designed to do.

I still think the the .303 round is better than .308 (7.62 NATO) round, but then I biased.

Maybe we should have a shoot off between

.308 Win (7.62 NATO)
.303 British
.30-06 (Garand/Springfield)
7.92 Mauser
7.62x54 Russian

& I spose we could include the intermediate rounds too

.30 M1 Carbine
7.92 Kurz (MP43 Round)
7.62x39 Russian (standard Kalasnikov Round)
.223 Rem (5.56 NATO)
5.45 (latest Kalashnikov round)

Plus the HMG rounds too

.50 Browning
12.7mm Russian
14.5mm Russian

Gonna also need one of those if the Mets win the World Series in Yankee Stadium.
Of course, the probabilities of THAT happening is as good as Paulson not whacking his Pud today. :)

Redneck, I didn't say that the .308 was not a good round but in the context of what people revere it as it's lousy. What context is that? Too many people seem to think it is the "ultimate" sniper round, it isn't. It excels at what swat teams use it for, urban enviroments where distance and cover (that distance affords)are not big factors. This is just a narrow area and a round excelling in this narrow field does not warrant the "ultimate sniper round" that people seem to refer to the .308 as. The .308 is the nato equivalent to our standard .223, it is their standard round. It's development was focused on a good all around performer, it was never designed to be the ultimate sniper round.

eia430,
I get what you are saying. The .308 isn't the utimate sniper round because there isn't one, they all have their pros and cons. The .308 does perform well within its limits. The .308 and .223 are both standard NATO rounds, each having its own uses. AFAIK most NATO countries use .223 assault rifles. The .308 is a direct descendent of the 30-06 and was a step towards a true assault rifle cartridge (the .223).
