"Gun"

I agree that putting bullet time in every game nowadays is dumb (that is so first Matrix and overused)...my question for you guys is...why not just avoid using it in the game...correct me if I am wrong but in both F.E.A.R. and GUN you don't have to use it if you don't want to.

I've been playing this game and enjoying it. It is a quick fun game and I'm not taking it too seriously. The graphics look like a c-rated game, but the actual gameplay is enjoyable.

The game does have bullet time, but it isn't exactly the same as other games with bullet time. It puts you in a zoomed 'scope' type mode while in bullet time, so you aren't actually dodging everyone elses ammo so much as getting some really good shots like they would in old western movies. Also, you really don't need to use it except for 1 or 2 times.

I like how the entire map is seamless and how it has some rpg aspects, makes the game much more enjoyable even though a lot of the side missions are cheesy. The concept deffinitely has room for improvement and I hope they make a grade-a sequel.

The first time I saw a commercial for this I went to the Activision site to look for information on it, and the only thing available at the time was a link on the main page which popped up an age check that required a valid credit card number. Screw you Activision! That was enough to put me off of any further interest.

Taken from Gamespot's review:

The shooting action is great, though it's not for the faint of heart. The makers of this game must be big fans of HBO's Deadwood or something, because the level of violence and general vulgarity in Gun greatly surpasses what you'd probably expect from a typical Western, even if you've seen some of the gorier ones. Gun pays tribute to the classic films in the genre, from the unbelievable rescue from the gallows in The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly to the unforgettable last battle (courtesy of a Gatling gun) in The Wild Bunch. However, Gun isn't just bloody; it's downright gnarly at times, like when you blast a big chunk out of an enemy's head with a clean shot from your rifle. Expect graphic violence, racism, and misogyny in heavy doses during the course of the game.

Gamespot gave it a 7.4/10

sounds like fun! 😉

Amen. 😀

Which reminds me, gotta catch up on Deadwood episodes tonight...

So I went to Gamestop just to look around and I saw the GUN. Looked pretty interesting in the back. I went home, looked up a review at gamerankings.com and it got a 81% IIRC and that falls within my area of good. Check a gamespot review to see the bad parts about it and decided that I wanted to buy it. Looked really good.

So, here I am, finished installing it. I'll post later when I start playing.

XBox version for me.

Liked the story, thought the game was fun, but it was way, way, way too short. I finished in no more than 8 hours. Now I didn't do all of the side missions, but no need to as I was able to beat the bosses without pushing my skills up too much.

360 version here...

I finished it a few days ago, but kept plugging away at the side missions to add to my Gamerscore. Got almost all of the acheivements.
The graphics pretty much suck. If this were on my Xbox, I wouldn't be complaining, but it looks like they did absolutely nothing to take advantage of the added power of the 360.
The story is good, and with help from Tom Skerritt and Kris Kristofferson (among others) the voice acting is probably the best I've run across in a game.
The gameplay is pretty good, and the controls are tight. The bullet time "quickdraw" is not bad at all. It's not an all-around slow-mo thing, as it's only active while in first person with your revolver(s).
I hope they make a GUN 2 from the ground up for the 360. I'm still surprised at how few Old West games are out there.

There's bullet-time? I hate that every single game these days feels the need to put some version of that in it.... ugh.

rofl no kidding!

It's not bullet time. It's a "mode" that has a timer. In the "mode" you can lock on to targets and quickly change from one target to another by simply moving the left analog stick left or right instead of swinging your gun around and sighting the target up manually. It's like auto-targetting, but you still have to pull the trigger, reload, dodge ranged attacks (very hard), manage against melee enemy attacks (nearly impossible), map hazards, etc.

It's not "bullet time" like in Max Payne and others.

I picked up the PS2 version earlier today (along with a wireless Pelican Predator controller). The idea of being able to "upgrade" your sh|t is cool and I like how they do it. Raising money is fun and I like how the game isn't linear in that if you don't want to do the storyline, you can run around doing whatever the hell you want. 😀 Seems like more and more games coming out over the years are moving away from a completely linear style of game.

It's got an excellent story -innovative and creative.

You can either rush through the game on easy, or take quite a bit longer to beat the game on harder settings. On the harder settings, you're almost required to do quite a few side missions to raise the funds for the cost of upgrading your gear to even stand a chance against some of the bosses. Well, unless you're good at Texas Hold'em anyway. There's a "mission" where you can play Hold'em 😀 If you're good enough, you can earn almost everything you need for all the upgrades to everything, right off the bat. It takes quite a bit of time, apparently. I'm just discovered the mini-game and I'm at the part of the game where I just escaped to my "hide out" with buddies. I intend to keep playing until I have every upgrade before continuing 😀 😛

I really like how a gunfight will very often incorporate almost all of the buttons on the pad. It's a challenge at times to be required to manage both analog sticks, the D-pad, the shape buttons, and both of each L and R buttons, all in quite spread-out and sometimes awkward combinations to get the job done.

The graphics aren't bad. They're not HL2, but I value gameplay, original storyline, and level/mission complexity more than just the looks of the game. The graphics aren't great, but the rest of the game more than makes up for it's lack of visual stimulation.

<edit>
WTF. K, I have apparently run out of crack. I just noticed after playing several tournaments and rushing through the mission ending screen that I've not been given $450 that I've won in the tourney. Apparently all you get is $10 or some crap. WTF. 🙁
