Eh, 22's dont hit very hard at all. They could kill you, but getting stabbed with a screwdriver would probably do more damage.

A 38 wadcutter will do some damage, but still nothing special of a round.

The 45 hits hard.

9mm is pretty much the smallest accepted caliber for personal protection.
