Looking for a .308 NATO type weapon? Do you mean semi-auto assault rifle, in general? Planning "Uncommon Valor: Redux" :D
More info please.

Depends on what you want to spend.

I would recommend the Poly-Tech "Legend" Match.

There is a lot to know here for an answer. Wood or Composite furniture? Caliber? Folder or fixed? The questions are endless but knowing what your budget is would help.

You need to be more specific about requirements. If you want a rifle that is based on the AK action, than either a Preban Galil or Valmet would be my first choice... If you want an actual AK clone, than my vote would probably be a preban Hungarian AK, although the Polytech Legend is also highly regarded....

Not sure if you are aware, but AK's are 7.62x39 and not 7.62 NATO... BIG difference

Not sure

Shotgun News just reviewed a few AKs a couple of weeks ago. The VEPR looked nice. RPK based. Kinda heavy.

I am looking for something under $500, composite furniture and preferably 5.45 rather than 7.62. I am even looking into compact carbine types.

For under $500 you aren't looking at anything to sturdy. hey...I'm on the front page today

For that, go to your FFL dealer and have them order you one of the Romanian .223 SAR models at the bottom of the link. Those function well. You will have funds left then for mags, ammo, recoil buffers and other stuff you need.

They are all easy to modify, but, why? Full auto is a waste of ammo. Better to learn fire control and target acquisition. Unless you like to hump a lot of .30cal around and hit nothing with it.

I bet if I were to fire into a crowd of those Anti War Homo Commies I'd get a bunch!

Full auto is not necessarily a waste of ammo. Not when you know how to use it in the right situations.

Actually most of your shots would probably be over their heads and wide right.

Yes, but a grenade would be a better suited for that situation. Unless of course you had a crew served weapon available.

That's a good point. Most people have never fired full auto. I like to take the mp5 out every once in a while, but it gets expensive very very quickly. I do love the 22lr automatics though. Those are a blast and suprisingly accurate.

You are right, napalm would be preferable!

I agree. But I was raised a rifleman, not Rambo.

Crowd control weapons: CS Gas, Shotgun with birdshot and bean bags, and my personal new favorite people mover the pepper paintball gun. When they first issued those things I ball playing with the laser sight. Just seeing the lasers moves people right along. In other countries rubber coated bulltes, and crap like that but that is likely to kill somebody so we frown on it here for good reason.

I have a Bulgarian SLR-95 that I really like. Very nice rifle, although the prices on them skyrocketed after the post-ban ban.

Your not bad. There are many AK variants available in .308. Namely the Galil. Just nothing actually issued to the old Soviet Bloc militaries.

I have never been a huge fan of the Galil sniper versions or the sportsters that are in .308. Much prefer a real AK or a M-16 family weapon.
