I guess I never really paid attention, but I thought the M1 Carbine was a semiautomatic rifle. I just saw a clip from the Korean War on AFN, and I swear there was a guy firing one on full auto. I barely caught a glimpse of it though, but I'm fairly certain it was an M1.

you are correct. In Korea, the retrofitted them for select fire and called them the "M2". They look the same from a distance.

There was a version that was produced that could select between semi and auto.

I didn't know this.

I have an M1 carbine that my father gave me (haven't seen it for years, my uncle keeps it). Needless to say, it's semi-automatic.

Years ago, as a teenager, I took it out plinking and had a blast. I fired up about 100 tracer rounds my father had saved. The fun stopped, of course, when I came home and discovered how much those rounds cost. ;)

No. The M1 Carbine fires a .30cal round..basically a pistol bullet. It is magazine-fed. The M1 Garand fires the 30-06, and is clip-fed (8rd top-loading clip..automatically ejects when empty).

The M2 Carbine is capable of both semi and fully automatic fire. The M1 Carbine & M1 Garand are semi.

Nope. The M1 Garand was a battle rifle, 8 round clip, fired .30-06 ammo. The M1 Carbine was not a rifle, but a 'carbine', i.e. short barreled medium range weapon. It uses the .30 carbine ammo, and was converted to select fire during the Korean conflict (it used up to 30 round detachable mags). These were once available from the US governement for sale to the public, but supplies have run out. The M1 Garand was never converted to select fire, and is still available to the public for sale via the CMP program. See this interesting ATOT link: link

Just one nitpicky comment. The round of the carbine isn't a pistol round. It actually has a good bit of propellant behind it even if the bullet itself is small (compared to a rifle round). It's almost midway between a pistol round and an assault rifle round.

Thanks for the info -- glad my rifle recognition skills are still good (though my knowledge isn't complete!). :)
