Gums are bleeding?!

I've recently had a bad time with my gums and the level of pain and bleeding that comes from each brushing. I don't understand what's wrong since I've never had a cavity in my life nor any other sort of mishap with my mouth. I brush atleast 2 times a day and floss about 5-6 days a week. But for some reason the last week I've had problems with bleeding when I brush. I haven't been eating too much sugar (except for yogurt.....2-3 8oz yogurts a day....29g of sugar or so per yogurt) and I haven't been brushing differently. The only thing I've noticed is that it started when I switched to a new toothbrush. The toothbrush is a "soft" bristle head though and my old one wasn't really that old.

Anyone who has any info, please let me know. It's not lots and lots of blood but definately noticeable. It goes away a minute or two after I brush but still.....I don't want to kiss someone if I've got something wrong with me :Q:Q

Gingivitis! ;)
But honestly if you're worried about it go see a dentist... I could be right.
If it started with the new brush perhaps it's the new brush? Get a sonicare. :)

Gingivitis. Rinse your mouth out with grain alcohol three time a day.

it's not inflammed though. I've been eating a smoothy everyday for the last few months and just found out that the high amounts of sugar are somewhat harmful. The sugars from fruit plus the amount for yogurts might be adding up....I dunno. Oh, I make my own smoothy...no store bought crap.

Does listerine/scope help at all? I have some around but I always feel like I should brush my teeth after I use that stuff....

How often do/did you floss before you noticed bleeding gums? If it wasn't often, floss them violently between every tooth. The blood will wash away the festering bacteria that's made it's home in your gumline. Gargle with straight hydrogen peroxide and rinse with listerine. After about a week, the swelling will be gone and if you maintain your gums, this won't happen again. Neglect your gums too long and get gingivitis and lose your teeth.

I use the hardest bristle toothbrush available and brush very hard. I make sure nothing festers in my gums; you can smell it on the floss. Bury that floss and don't be afraid of a little blood and pain. That is a small price to pay for keeping your original teeth.

Soft bristled brushes are actually more effective in getting at plaque and tarter than hard bristled brushes.

It sounds like you have a mild case of gingivitis. When was the last time you had a cleaning?

Are you getting enough Vit. C?

KM, I flossed the same amount before as well. I rarely had any problems with blood even when I flossed before last week. I'll try smelling the floss next time I floss to see if I can smell anything.....never though of that before, thanks.

I'll use some hydrogen peroxide tonight as well, thanks for the tips.

And no....I DON'T HAVE SCURVEY! In fact I have loads of vitamin c everyday, thanks to oj and smoothies :D

Yeah, vit c is plentyful for me. I got a cleaning about 3-4 months ago tops during the summer. That's part of the reason I'm so surprised....

If you still have your old toothbrush, go back to it for a few days and see if that changes anything.
Whenever I get a new toothbrush--even same brand and model--I have to take it a lot easier until the brush and my mouth are broken in, otherwise I pay big like you are.

If you've been properly maintaining your teeth, see a dentist as soon as you can.

well crap, I will persue this "get professional help" route if these problems persist after this weekend. Thank you all very much for helping me out on this, I really hope it's just the toothbrush and not me!

Im not a dentist but I play one on AT. Ask your dentist about video card benchmarks while you are there, I hear they all know their pc games.

You need to see a dentist. A good cleaning is in order.

The pain from cold or hot is caused by your gums receeding and exposing more nerves. Brush with an electric brush. Imho the house brand, Equate, that Wal-Mart sells for 20 bucks is a steal. Then use Colgate Total or the equivalent that has an ingredient that deadens the pain.

You only get one set, take care of them!

Sniffing floss? LOL, plaque smells nasty whether or not you have gingivitis.

Listerine is helpful for killing germs and preventing gum disease but don't expect it to work miracles if you already have a problem.

You should consult with your dentist; he may recommend removing of scaling or build-up below the gumline that's the cause of gum disease (and eventual tooth loss). There are even some prescription drugs that specifically fight gum disease.

um, dude, there is such a thing as brushing too hard and making yer gums to recede. Gum tissue is ginger so don't beat up on it or it will go away.

How often do you floss? If you floss like once every day or every other day you should eliminate the bleeding by flossing it helps
strengthen the gums at least thats what my dentist says. I've had gum bleeding but once I started flossing regularly no problem
there. You might want to visit your dentist if its been a year maybe you need a good cleaning. :)

Best to see a dentist and if you haven't had a full mouth x-ray in a while it might be a good idea. I had the same problem too for a while it can be hereditary. What you want to watch out for on the x-rays is any bone loss around the base of the teeth. If there is, flossing isn't going to reach and you'll need to use a waterpick.
