You're just starting out and willing to drop $1200 on a guitar? Wow.
Do you have any guitar experience, or any musical experience at all? If not, I highly suggest you spend something like $200-$300 to start out with. Many people who start learning the guitar give it up shortly thereafter. Before investing so much money, you should make sure that it's something you'll like.
If you're thinking of buying something that expensive to make yourself sound better, think again! If you're a beginner you will sound terrible whether you're playing on a Johnson or a Taylor. The quality of the instrument really truly only matters once you've played for a while.
Still want to spend $1200? Get a Taylor. IMHO they are superior to all others. That being said, I don't own one yet. I don't feel like I'm a good enough guitarist to deserve one.
The guitar I play is no slouch, however. It's a Seagull S6+ CW... Seagull guitars are consistently rated as having an awesome bang for the buck. They are handmade, made of quality woods, and as a result have fantastic sound.
Seriously, other guitarists (many who are more experienced than I) will tell you to start with something cheap. Then "graduate" to better ones as you progress skill-wise. Buying a $1200 guitar right off the bat is like going from pre-school to High School.
Someone in another thread said it best... "play a cheap guitar until you can identify exactly what makes it cheap" (or something to that effect).
If you're interested in Seagull, here's their
web site.
Best of luck
