Hi all,

Can someone please recommend me a guitar? Price range about $500-$800. My band is going to be a black metal band, so I would want a guitar with a good heavy metal sound. I'm still a beginner, but I am willing to spend the money for a bad ass guitar. I don't think my Squier Bullet will cut it. :)

Thanks!!

Ibanez RG series are awesome for metal and they are great for a beginner. You can probably pick up a used RG570 for a couple hundred. I don't recommend anything lower then a 550 series.

Seek no more:

Behold...

the King V

--EDIT--

And of course, it all comes to preference in the end. I personally am not too fond of Ibanez, at least for heavier metal, as I find them lacking a bit in the 'low punch' department. They are very nice for more melodic shredding though.

But that's just my opinion; go to Guitar Center, try various guitars with different amps, fiddle with the distortion and volume, different picks, different songs, etc.

Ah, and I strongly recommend you buy one with a fixed bridge.

Floating bridges and whammy bars are not worth the hassle.

Does the King V have a fixed bridge? :) Sorry, I don't know much about these things. Also, what's the price? I can't seem to find it on that page. :)

EDIT: Found the prices, and the King V is WAY too expensive. :( I think, at the most, I may be willing to spend is maybe $1000. Any other recommendations, one with a fixed bridge?

Thanks!!

Look around for a guitar show/convention near you. Go there, there's usually scads of guitars you can just pick up to try out, and good deals on used ones.

Thanks. I will stop by my local instrument shop. Sam Ash has A LOT of sales on guitars. I will stop by and see what they recommend.

Thanks!

Are there any music shops that carry usesd gear where you live? I highly recommend buying used gear. It's significanatly less expensive than buying new gear. You'll be able to sit down and play different instruments to get a feel as well as ask someone working what he feels are the better guitars for sale.

Jackson, ESP, and Ibanez all make good metal guitars. I have a Jackson DXMG and put EMG-81s in it. It' plays and sounds great. But you may like something different. Just go to a music shop and start playing some guitars.

I will stop by my local Sam Ash sometime. Not sure when, but I will when I get the chance. Right now I am thinking of either Jackson of Ibanez. I will see what they recommend, and try out what I like. They do carry used guitars, so that is a good thing.

Thanks guys!!

I was talking more about something like this.

But the next Dallas show isn't until April. But if you live in San Antonio, you might want to make the trip to Austin to look around. The market for used guitars is pretty active with students and zillions of bands around. Lots of guitar shops besides the chains.

There's a cheaper line of Jackson guitars which is quite good; the dfference is that they normally don't have 'signature' pickups like the EMG or Seymour Duncans you'd find in a pricier guitar.

Oh, and a fixed bridge would look like this

as opposed to a floating bridge

As you can see, in the fixed bridge the strings go right through the body of the guitar, whereas in the floating one they are clamped to an articulated bridge which is held by 3 or 4
tight springs on the back. They are used so that you can alter the tension and thus the pitch with a Wammy war. But it makes changing strings a real pain, as it's very easy to mess with the guitars calibration, thus making it impossible to tune right until recalibrated.

It's a matter of choice, but I find wammy bars too much a product of the 80s and can do without them.

Oh, and the King V is available with and without the floating bridge: The KV1 has a fixed bridge, KV2 floating bridge, KV3, floating bridge and cheap pickups.
