yes, so, i want to buy an electric soon, i have an acoustic and have been playing it since about august, im planning on getting an electric this summer though, and i need some suggestions of what to get, right now im looking at an ibanez sa160, its just over 300, i really like the look of it, and ive seen a lot of good comments about it, but any suggestions are welcome...

also, whats the differences in the pickups, the type of pickups and where they are, and what types should i be looking for for different types of music?

if you like a guitar and it feels good under your fingers, go for it. thats the most important thing for learning and advancing, because if you don't like playing that guitar, you won't practice. Also, buy a set of elixir strings. that makes a big difference too.

You'll most likely want a guitar with two humbuckers then, for that type of music. And if you want to play satriani, you'll most def. need them.
 
honestly, buy a guitar the feels good before you worry about the pickups. Narrow it down to those you like to play without an amp, focusing stricly on those that feel good to you. Then decide based upon those that have the best pickups.

While it's important to find a guitar that fits you, the sound is more important in the long run since certain guitars cannot acheive what he's looking for. Don't buy a guitar that doesn't fit you because of the pickups, but also don't buy one that fits you that doesn't sound like what you want.

Hey man, I wish you all the luck in the world, but in all probability you will never begin to approcah Satch's talent.

Try to get a twin humbucker. Personally, I don't much like Ibanez, but that's just a matter of taste.
 
what brand of guitar do you suggest if not an ibanez? i really have no idea what i want, every saturday i have a lesson and i try to play around with a guitar while im there before or after, but, im still not sure what i want, i really need to just sit there for like 2 hours one day and try them all out, but, yeah, any suggestions to have a look at right away would be helpfull too
 
I suggest going out and looking for a used guitar to help cut cost. Go to a music store and try out some guitars... Most of my friends that play electric like really low action. I suggest trying to find a Fender Stratocaster. They have a cheap line called "Squire". It has the strat look, but the pickups are lacking. I suggest trying to find a used Fat Strat (Strat with Humbucker pickups) or possibly a Japanese Strat. The Jap Strats are hard to come by because they stopped making them in the 1980s, but they're known for having better quality than even the American Strats. 😉

My first guitar was a Washburn POS, but I'd definitely get an Ibanez over that. I'm all Gibson now. You may want to look at some Epiphone's. Epiphone is to Gibson what Squire is to Fender.
 
imo, the best investment would be a used carvin off ebay. Carvin has an awesome way of making guitars, and they always come out perfect. I bought a bass for $1100 (bunny brunel 5 string) and it plays and sounds better than any bass at guitar center, including the pedullas, etc. You can probably find a used bolt series for $400-$600.

btw, you can always change pickups down the road if you find a guitar that has handling you love, but lacks in pickups.

kind of, accept epiphone actually makes some decent guitars......I tried Squire Telecaster once.....man, i cried because it was so bad.....
 
Yeah, most Squiers seem to be pretty junky. There's the odd one here and there that's actually pretty nice. Like the people said, the pickups aren't really a big deal to change out later, so it's more important to get one that plays well. The amp you use will also be a big part of the equation. I would say an Ibanez should be fine, if it plays well. Personally I have a Yamaha AES500 electric and a Cort J Triggs electric (both dual humbuckers). The Yamaha is nice in that it's got a coil tap, so I can use the humbuckers as either single coil or hummers.
I don't know that I've ever played a bad Yamaha guitar, honestly.

Oh yeah, I second the vote for Elixir strings, too. Very nice.
