guitar purchase ?

I'd go with either the Roland Cube 30 or Vox Valvetronix AD30VT. Both of these sound good and are amazingly versatile. You can pretty much play any style of music on them without having to buy a separate pedal.

how's this one ? Any better in the same range / features ?

I have the 10 watt version of that amp. Mine only has a 6 1/2" speaker, so there's really no bottom in it, but it's loud and has the classic Marshall distortion. 🙂

I'm looking at a Pignose or Epiphone tube amp next.

Line 6 makes some great practice amps with your basic effects and headphone out. I have a Spider II 15 in the livingroom when I want to noodle around without going to the basement to hammer on the big gear.

I have one of those, and it's a great practice amp. It more than fills my house with sound, if I crank it up. It's definitely an improvement.

Check out Ibanex guitars in the $200 range to pair with that amp. They are really good for their price, and if he wants a different sound, you will only need to upgrade the pickups.

This amp is a great modeling amp, and you don't have to put on earplugs to get a fat sound out of it.

Roland Cube 30

Or, if you want a tube amp, this is nice

Fender Blues Junior

You probably don't need more than 15W for a home amp. Hell, mine is 2W and it's plenty loud 🙂

The Wattage isn't just for lounder volumes. A 15w amp will many times go as loud as a 50w amp, but the 50w amp will sound a lot better at all volumes.

I picked up a used Marshall AVT50 for around $325 shipped from Ebay (it was missing hte front "marshall" logo and the cooling fan needed to be replaced, cost $8), and it is a GREAT amp in my opinion. Hybrid tube/solid state. I also got a Epiphone Les Paul Standard for $400 used from Ebay. Great feeling guitar, pickups will need to be swapped later of course.

Those are really nice guitars. The lead guitar player in the band that I'm in swears by Rondo's guitars. He plays a les paul SX and les paul Agile.

I would go for a better guitar before an amp. A little higher quality guitar can make a lot of differences in sound and playability. In my experience, stratocaster design guitars are really easy to play and the SX strats on Rondo sound and play great. I bought one from there for $100, and it plays just as good as a real fender strat. If he's dead set on an amp, I would look around on ebay. Small combo amps don't hold their value well, so good ones can be found for cheap. Crate makes decent quality cheap amps. Sorry for the book 😀

I am sort of in the same situation come to think of it. I have this weirdo Squire m70 which I got for $160 ($350 guitar) but I am looking to move up. Want a Epiphone or Gibson, but not sure which one. Maybe a Epi Standard then replace the pickups. So many options.

Hey Fritzo, why don't you just give me your Black Beauty... just because I am a nice guy 😉

Try out schecter guitars (owned an omen 6, replaced the pups and it sounded great), or prs's entry level. I bought a prs se santana edition for around $450.

Those do look pretty nice. I'm tempted to re-sell my Epiphone Les Paul for ~$400 and then buy this http://www.rondomusic.net/Agile2500blk.htm for $230 along with 2 nice pickups for the other $170. I'd probably end up with a better sound......hmmm (sorry for a partial hijack...lol)

I'm liking the 3000 gold top ... But I don't think I could give up my Epi Les Paul for it. What can I say .. I'm a brand whore. 😉

lol....you got stock pickups in it or did you replace them? Some people act like they are unusable but they aren't horrible. They just aren't great.

stock pickups. they're fine. down the line, I'll probably throw in some classic 57's, but for now they get the job done. With the distortion up on my little Marshall, I don't think I'd hear the difference. 🙂

I'm thinking of getting an Agile AL-2500. What's the difference between the P90 and humbucker pickups? I saw 2 different prices for the Cherry Sunburst color and it's related to the pickups. Could save myself $40.

P90s are single coil so they have a thinner, cleaner sound. The downside is they pick up a lot of noise under some conditions. That said they sound great for the right type of music. Examples are The Who: Live at Leeds, Social Distortion, and the last couple of Green Day records. Humbuckers sound thicker and less noisy. Better for really high gain sounds like metal.

I was going to snag the AL-2500 Goldtop then they jacked the price up to $240. Still some good Agiles for $200 at Rondo.
