guitar purchase ?

what's a good electric guitar for the $300 range ? We bought a "beginner package" with a squier strat and a small amp for about $150... but now we're looking for a better guitar for him. Or would a better amp help things ? He feels he's "outgrown" the beginner set and $300 is our budget. Thx.

can someone explain how pricier guitars are "better" ? I've had old ones which were tough to finger on the fretboard... feels tight. Are they better this way, along with a better sound ? More pickups (not sure what that really means), etc. ? thx.

everything...from the wood used to the pickups that are used. Different woods resonate and sustain differently.

is it even worth it to go from a $150 guitar to a $300 guitar ?

Depends what you buy. I mean, youe say it is a $150 Squire start combo. I personaly think anything is better than a squire combo sold at guiatr stores (even a $150 Yamaha). If you know there will be a commitment, price shouldn't matter (unles she wants a $1000 guitar).

$300 will probably get you better action, material, and pickups. It depends if your $150 really sucks or not. How many pickups does it have? Do you get a lot of fret-buzz?

A $300 guitar is still not so great. IMHO, the $150 - 300 range are for people who need to figure out if they really want to play. If you graduate you should really treat yourself to the next level ($600 - $1000).

I am sort of in the same situation come to think of it. I have this weirdo Squire m70 which I got for $160 ($350 guitar) but I am looking to move up. Want a Epiphone or Gibson, but not sure which one. Maybe a Epi Standard then replace the pickups. So many options.

Hey Fritzo, why don't you just give me your Black Beauty... just because I am a nice guy 😉

Because you're not worth that much heheheh.

A actually use my modified LP-100 as my main axe for gigs and practice. The pickups made a HUGE difference (they're reproductions of the high gain overwound '57 Les Paul pickups, GREAT product, but a bit pricey at $100 each). It's a cheap guitar that I got sounding the way I like it, and it won't cause any heartache if I scratch it or get beer spilled on it or if someone rips it off. I only use my BB on special gigs, or for showing off heheheh.

Any idea how the pickups are in the Epi Les Paul Custom?

Save up some more money. $150 to $300 is not a big upgrade, but an expensive side-step. Unless you don't mind buying used.

thx guys, would a better amp make a difference instead ? We'll upgrade the guitar later on (or he can do it himself if he wants).. at least the amp will then be taken care of.

i personally think most guitars are pretty junky unless you spend at least $500, unless you get lucky on a good used one. The thing about buying a cheap guitar is it will most likely frustrate a new player and will not be fun to learn on, my suggestion is to shop around and try out a lot of guitars before you buy.

I second this sugestion. I have one of their 2500 Gold Top LP copies and I've been really impressed with it. It's doubly impressive for the price.
