Guitar players: Strings?

I've got an Epiphone Les Paul that I play on and off. I started off years ago with the standard Gibson LP 9s, but slowly got through to thicker gauge strings... 10s, and 11s.

I played with some Elixr Nanoweb coated strings for a while too, and while they felt nice and lasted a long time, I found they didn't give the same sound as uncoated strings.

This week I picked up my first set of flatwound strings and I'm really liking them. They have a nice warm tone, and feel really nice on my fingers. The ones I got were D'Addario Chromes.

I've never used those, but I hear they wear out quicker. I always used Dean Markley 11s, and swapped the wound 3rd string for an unwound. The set was kind of unbalanced, but that's what I like about it. The bottom end was unproportionally heavy, which gave a great chunky palm mute sound, while leaving the top end small enough to be manageable.

I've always used slinky-11s on my epi les paul.

slinky 10s on a couple of fenders, and 9s on a squire tele that refuses to set up right with anything heavier.

Ernie Ball Super Slinky 9's for me please. I use Super Slinky Heavy Bottoms on my Telecaster to give it some balls.

those flatwounds are the shit for electric bluegrass and "picky" country twag, I also use the EB heavybottom 9's or 10's for everything else

not trying to change the subject, but I'm looking for an upgrade on my current acoustic (Seagull M6 gloss). Any suggestions?

I've been using Ernie Ball strings for a while.

I used to use the Hybrid Slinky (.009 - .046) set on my standard tuned guitar fairly regularly, but I've been using the RPS10s. They're holding up really well. I can't tell how well the wraps are working, but I haven't had a breakage yet...I guess they do work. 🙂 I also have some Coated Titanium Regular Slinkys that I'll eventually get to.

On my standard tuned seven string, I use RPS10s with an added .56 nickelwound for the low b.

On my Epi LP JCM, which is tuned to down to C standard, I use the Medium Gauge Nickelwound (.013 .017 .026 .034 .046 .056). A really heavy set that has such a nice, big sound on that guitar.

I don't remember the gauge on my acoustic guitar, but I bought a set of coated to try out next change.

Go to a guitar store and play several different brands and models in your price range.

I use the Ernie Ball Regular Slinky 10s. Works well for me. I used to use the Skinny Top/Heavy Bottom. They sound great but held me back a little. Flat round looks interesting but I like the feel of the wound strings.

BTW: Got my first Gibson Les Paul this week! I have no excuse for sucking anymore 😀

BTW- Those flat strings are typically used by slide/blues players. Some people like them, some don't. I don't like them because they slip away from my fingertips during vibrato.

Why aren't they called wires?

Strings used to be made from lamb guts (they were actually strings). Steel strings were invented in the 1800's. They kept the name "strings" because that's the part of the guitar they replaced.

D`Addario 10-46s for me on most of my guitars.

Ernie Ball Slinky 10's are good but lose their tone too fast. Same with GHS Boomers for me. I use DR 12s on one of my guitars and a custom, cobbled together 13 set on another.

I hate Elixirs.. gross slick feeling and the coating fucks with the tone too much.

D'addario Nickel Wound 9s.
D'addario EXL Phosphor Bronze 11s Thick bottom on the acoustic.

EDIT: Oh and coreyb, look up Babicz guitars.. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
