guitar players: distortion question!

my friend bought this package: electric guitar
and the package clearly states it has a "scorching distortion channel." When my friend was playing it, no wear on the amp, was a distortion knob. Am i wrong that you have to buy a distortion pad before you can you the distortion on the amp? Thanks.

Drive Select turns on the Distortion, the Gain knob adjusts the level/amount of distortion.

so what exactly do the distortion pads do?
pad? 😉 I think you mean pedal.

They make more distortion. More, and much better. You will find that the amp's distortion for the most part, well, sucks.

I recommend the Boss MetalZone... if you're looking for the thick palm muted crunch, a'la Metallica, etc.

does this amp have the outlet to plug in a distortion pedal 🙂

That amp does come with a distortion channel, called "drive." To select the drive channel, you can just press the drive select button. You could also buy a petal made specifically for the amp to select that channel (I'm not sure about that amp because I don't see any inputs for such a petal). Or you could go out and buy a better distortion petal, like suggested. I think BOSS makes pretty good petals.

Bah, just get Cubase SX and Amplitube. Nobody uses real hardware anymore. Nobody.

😉

Yeah, it has inputs for the guitar and other external petals, but I'm thinking about a petal that controlls the amp's drive channel. Basically, instead of pressing the drive channel button, he could step on a petal to select that channel. On my amp, the input for that petal is on the back.

perhaps your friend should trying reading the manual before diving into the complicated world of guitars.

Geeze, you guys get so hostile! Give the guy a break :disgust:

Now, some amps have a built in distortion, but it's most likely more of an overdrive than distortion. A distortion pedal allow you to get different types of sounds as well as give you the flexibility to turn the distortion on and off. I personally use a Yardbox pedal for my distortion (and I'll never give it up....best pedal I've ever owned), along with a Crybaby Wah, an Ibanez echo, and a MXR phaser. These are all patched together and then plugged into my amp (the wah is on the end, then the cable from that goes to the input on the amp). I would recommend a distortion pedal because, as I stated, the one built into the amp is most likely an overdrive, which usually sounds kind of muddy- especially if that amp doesn't have any reverb on it.

Let me know if you have any other questions. I've been playing for 20 years now and am glad to help out people starting out.

Uh, yes they do. You'll find most guitarists are purists and hate that software simulation crap.

Bah, they are stuck in the past. You can do everything on computers now and nobody will every know the difference.

The pickups in a Squire Strat are not that hot. Especially for distortion.
I disagree.

While they're no EMG-81's, they can still crank and sound pretty decent for what they are.. 😀

You're obviously speaking out of ignorance. Also, it'd be interesting to see you stop playing in the middle of a song to click a mouse to change in effect 🙂
