Ever since I watched the Chili Pepper DVD live @ slane castle.... I've been wondering what pedal gives Frusciante this sorta "cranking" sound. I've found his setup here and the video where you can hear it is here. It's towards the end when the solo starts. Pic to show you about where it starts. Thanks guys.
 
Sorry for the late reply. All I hear is a simple overdrive coming out of a single coil pickup.

That sound was made famous by John Lee Hooker. Looking at his setup, either he's just using a straight line to the Marshalls, or he has his Muff Pi on light settings.
