I just picked up a guitar and was wondering how these tabs worked. Can any guitarist out there please explain these. Thanks
 
The number on each string is the fret that you hold down on that string while playing the string. The lowest line on the tab is the top (fattest) string. If there are multiple numbers in the same vertical space, that means you play those strings at the same time.
