Guitar Hero Options

Hi folks. . .I'm looking for some purchasing advice. My GF has decided she likes Guitar Hero after playing it on the ipad, and since her birthday is coming up I was going to get her it for a proper console. A couple of questions. . .

I've seen both Guitar Hero 5 and a newer Guitar Hero - Warriors of Rock available for about the same price. I guess I'd lean towards the newer one - unless anyone can give me a good reason not to?

The other thing - she has a Wii so I could get her the game for that. . .alternatively my XBox 360 mostly gathers dust sat next to my PC, so I'd be happy for it to live at her place if the 360 version of Guitar Hero is much better than the Wii one. I imagine it's the same game, but it'll look prettier on the 360? Are there any other differences worth knowing about between the two platforms?

I have both. I enjoyed GH5 much more than GH:WOR, the set list was much better in GH5 imo. I've still not completed all the songs on GH:WOR, and I doubt I'll go back to it now I have RB3.

For the older GH games, the DLC was very limited on the Wii. I'm not sure if this has changed for the more recent ones. The Wii lacks storage space as well, so if you were planning on downloading a lot of new tracks you may have problems here. I think I read somewhere that you can use USB storage on the Wii for this type of DLC now, but I am not certain, it would probably be best to check first.

Maybe consider Rock Band? I've had more fun with RB1/2/3 than I have had with any of the GH games. The DLC library is huge for RB as well.

Consider Rock Band 3 instead, it has a much larger music library available and supports a keyboard and real guitar if you are interested in those things.

If you do get it, the Xbox 360 is a MUCH better platform for Rock Band than the Wii.

Is Rock Band worth playing single-player? I've always assumed it requires 4 people and a full set of toys for some reason.

As much as I love her I've never understood the appeal of Guitar Hero, so I'm not likely to share in the experience. lol

Sure, it plays just fine single player. All the recent versions of guitar hero also support a full band, but have single player as well. I play quite a bit of single player Rock Band.

concerning specifically gh5 and ghwor, gh5 seems to be geared more toward the casual gamer; overall the game is quite easy. of all of the guitar hero games, it is the 2nd easiest to full combo (100% every song [without overstrumming] on-disc) in the series, next to aerosmith. conversely, wor has some quite difficult songs.

i haven't really played either game too much, as my interest in these games has tapered off since gh3, but it's usually better to go with the newer one, and i think that applies in this case. to me, wor seems more cohesive than gh5 and feels like a better experience in general. core gameplay is more or less identical, so really it probably comes down to which one has a setlist that your gf will like more.

concerning 360 or wii, 360 is a better platform; it's much more popular for the gh/rb games. not that the wii is bad, just that the 360 will have more people playing online...and usually there are hardly any people on there, tbh. *especially* with gh5. it's so hard to find anyone playing a gh game on xbl that's not the latest one. gh3 may be an exception to this since about a billion bought it and many consider it something of a gold standard in the series. although i personally prefer the [even] older gh games, gh3 is probably what i'd consider to be something of a poster child for gh games...but i digress.

the only reason that rock band single player kinda sucks is that rock band tends to focus on having songs that try to balance the fun between all 4 instruments, making for many bland songs on individual instruments (at least guitar...there's only 1 songs between rb1/2/3 on-disc that is actually difficult to full combo, and that's green grass and high tides on rock band 1...and it's only because the game has a bad time trying to register fast strumming). whereas guitar hero tries to make a setlist fun for guitar, seemingly with other instruments as a bit of an afterthought.

I would go rockband, and on the 360. There's tons of extra songs she can buy online, in addition to the being able to import the 1st and 2nd games tracks into the 3rd game for a small cost. You then have everything guitar hero offers, PLUS the options of getting a keyboard, drumset, etc if you/she wants. If you stick her with GH, then you don't really like this girl. Any decent human being would give a person Rock Band.

Rockband is way better then guitar hero. I have owned both and I always played rockband alot more then guitar hero. The only GH game I liked was the GH3 while I liked all the RB games
