Hi there, i'm new to playing guitar...and i'm trying to figure out a song, but it goes from a D chord to a Bm chord in the same measure(pretty quicly) and it's hard for me to do that, going from an open chord to a bar chord......are there any alternatives i can use that's open so i can switch faster, or is there anything i can do besides practice that can maybe help me transition faster? thanks

Bm7 uses the same notes as D6th, D, F#, A, and B, but the root note is different (B, obviously). You can use the D6 to strum along with your tune until you get the strenght to play the bar chord. :)

Put your fingers on the second fret of the high E string, the third fret of the B string, and the fourth fret of the G string. You can get a full four fingered Bm chord by adding the fourth fret of the D string.

Warning -- DON'T use that as an excuse not to practice getting your bar chords together. :)

Practice strumming to The Ramones:D (only kidding);) The open D to a barred Bm should flow with a little practice. Have fun.

Do you know all your chords? If you do, simply strum them in random order, over and over and over. The key to playing guitar is lots of repetition. Practice for hours. It'll seem like you're getting nowhere at first, but just do it - then a week later, look back at how you were then. You'll see that you've improved massively. If you've been playing classical, the talent is definitely there. So just practice alternating chords, it's really easy. You just have to make your fingers get "used" to the positions and it's all good. If I can do it, you can do it. :)

You can either do a 'granny' style Bm (or as others call it a open chord), or a D bar chord. If you're just starting I would reccomend doing the D on the 5th fret & the Bm on the 7th fret for that song.

Basically like everyone else said you just have to do it over and over again and you will get it. It takes a while to be able to do anything quick on the guitar. Its not something you can do overnight. If you have friends that are good at guitar ask them for some help, guitar players are usually more than happy to show off a little bit at how good they are and help you in the process.
