Well, I want to move up from my crapola Behringer 100 dollar POS that i have now..so I need a new guitar. I was thinking either a fender mexistrat or an Ibanez sz320.

Anything else in this price range you guys recommend? Suggestions?

Thanks on the help on prices guys, but I have a friend that works for american musical supply, so I can get things fairly cheap. I'm just looking for suggestions on guitars.

Oh, but thanks for the thread ruffilb..that was a good read.

What sort of music do you want to play with it?

What kind of amp are you pairing it with?

I would suggests either the Fender Standard Stratocaster or the Epiphone Les Paul Standard. I'm partial to the look of the Les Paul, so that would be my number one choice.

Stuff like RHCP, Muse, etc...Every once in a while i'll play an acoustic song too..heh.

Haven't decided on the amp yet. That might actually have to wait a bit until after I get my guitar, i'm not sure yet. Probably something in the 100 dollar range though? Any suggestions on that would be great aswell. Right now i have a really bad starter amp.

Check the musical instruments section of craigslist.org There you will find quality instruments at prices that can be bargained for.

Buying a 500 dollar guitar for a 100 dollar amp is going to sound like a 100 dollar guitar.

For RHCP and Muse you're on the right track with a Fender guitar as both bands use them (among other things). Muse favors P90's in the neck and a hot wound humbucker in the bridge. Frusciante uses a combination of a few older Strats and a Gretcsh White Falcon (way out of your PR).

A mexi strat is prob your best bet in that price range if you want to cover all of those styles. I would think more heavily about the kind of amp you're plugging into. Both Muse and Frusciante play british style EL34 tubes though a tube amp is probably out of your price range. Frusciante and his trusty Marshall Silver Jubillee and JTM45's and Muse play Diezel amps I believe with silicon transistor based fuzz units.

I don't need to play loud, just quality. What's the lowest you'd recommend spending on an amp?

In that price range you can get a good used American strat in excellent condition. The tone, playability, and resale value would be better than the std mexican strat.

2002 American standard

1987 American Standard

1996 US Texas Special

Agreed. American strat will do you well if you can find one in your range and dont mind used.

As far as amp, it isn't about 'loud' as much as it is quality. A good starter amp would be a Fender tube amp.

Here are two good practice/starter tube amps:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/...nde-Blues-Junior-Guitar-Amp?sku=480491
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-Pro-Junior-Combo-Amp?sku=480861

The latter being based on Leo Fender's Champ circuit

This really all depends on how serious you are about your quality and tone. You can get something solid state for cheaper but you won't be happy with it if you're looking for rich tone.

Ah..too expensive 🙁 My poor wallet.

I'm not sure if I want to go used or not, I suppose if I got the chance to play it first.

I would always recommend playing a guitar before you buy it.

These aren't set in stone btw, just suggestions. Let your ears decide what sounds best for what you want because we could give you hundreds of suggestions but they don't mean anything if you're not satisfied.

If you can't play the guitar before you buy it, at least have it set up professionally, it can do wonders.

If you can find an old 1960's Alamo Capri tube amp, that would be cool. They sell for a little over 100 bucks and are an all tube circutry.

Or at least a Marshall Valvestate. It has a single tube in the preamp but thats where the boost gets its distortion. Its a great sounding amp, and you can get the amp really cheap.

hes got it covered.

Going to chime in and also say Standard Strat. Got mine for $495 CDN two years ago, still lovely and my first guitar. However, after hearing a Tele, I would almost recommend that a bit more, but it's about $100-ish more. Just don't go for mass produced Squiers. Epihpone Les Paul isn't a bad choice, go to a store and try them out (I tried to try, but I couldn't play, I'm guessing you can🙂).

If you can really get a used American Strat, that would just be perfect too. I've heard stories of people dumping very expensive guitars for a small fraction of what they're worth at 'flea' markets.

I have an Epiphone Les Paul Standard QMT that I play through a VOX AD30VT 30w Combo that sound EXCELLENT together. The VOX is a Valvetronix line which has a Tube driven pre-amp. Has several Amp models (including a Fender Reverb style and a 2 Different Marshall styles that sound very close) and distortion/reverb/chorus combinations that are very nice sounding. Don't let the 30w rating fool you, it will easily compete with an unmiked drum set. I was using a Line 6 Spider II 112 (75w) that I just couldn't wrap myself around. I got the VOX for $170 used at Guitar Center with an extended warranty.

it's understandable if you're uncomfortable buying a used guitar sight-unseen. but definitely do yourself a favor and pick up a used amp - there's no good reason to buy new. a used Blues Jr. will run you $200-300.

once upon a time i picked up a used mexistrat for $270 and a used Blues Jr for $250.
