Why don't you just copy a picture of a fretboard and keep writing the correct notes on it until you have all of them memorized?

i wouldn't bother even doing that, just go up and down each string, hit the note and say the note out loud, do that about 10 times each string, then start over, do that every day - every couple of days, and you'll have them in no time, seeing a chart isnt going to help at all, i just memorized some of the main notes and frets, like whats on the 5th, 7th, 9th ect... thats easy to do to and helps a lot, and you'll know the inbetween notes before you can say "go commit seppuku while i sleep with my hot nurse whore!"

holy shit! are you kidding!! i can't believe it!!!!!11!! Congradulations, you're a dumbass... if you're learning the notes still you're most likely not going to be messing with the tuning beyond EADGBe...

anyways... i found an easy program that you can use to learn the frets, Fretboard Warrior, its free, theres also one at musictheory.net its online or you can download it i think, musictheory.net is a good site, lots of stuff there

well, if he wants to play something in drop D (which is the tuning I learned my first song in, since it makes powerchords really easy), then his little fretboad picture wont help him very much, will it?

god forbid somebody learns just a little bit of music theory while learning to play an instrument.

oh noes! the sixth and fourth strings start on the same note! what ever does that mean? maybe that the notes are in the same order?!?!? if you know the fretboard up and down in standard tuning, then you should be able to start at any given note and go up twelve frets, (an octave) and be able to say the notes, which means that in any given tuning you would know, after a few minutes of orientation, what and where the notes are

serously, you aren't going to go past drop d for a while, i don't think i've really had much of a need for anything other than standard and drop d, ive got a few songs to learn that do, but i haven't gotten to them yet

oh noes! the sixth and fourth strings start on the same note! what ever does that mean? maybe that the notes are in the same order?!?!? dear lord, it takes like 2 mintues to learn those, and if you know the fretboard up and down in standard tuning, then you should be able to start at any given note and go up twelve frets, (an octave) and be able to say the notes, which means that in any given tuning you would know, after a few minutes of orientation, what and where the notes are

this is my point exactly. whats the need for a poster for such a simple task? do you have a poster of your keyboard on your wall?

That's the best way. You can use a chart for reference of course, but obviously you'll want to physically hit those notes instead of just reading them. That way, your ear can get accustomed to the pitch that note makes, which will help greatly when it comes to "learning by ear", and also whenever you want to jam to something. It's pretty easy to remember the fretboard, you just have to practice doing it, and keep telling yourself what note your hitting.

As for different tunings, its simple. All charts of course will be shown in standard tuning, but if you change the tuning, it won't be the same on paper as it is in the fretboard. So you can't just say " well the 9th fret on the low E is a C#/Db", because it won't be if you drop tune. But I think that was all fairly straightforward. Just think of the intervals. 2 frets between all natural notes except from B to C, and E to F, which is 1 fret. Pretty simple.

Not exactly. Though you don't have to know theory to play music, it is VERY helpful to know it. Especially when trying to write your own music.

Well I know that understanding theory is a great thing, I know quite a bit myself..but knowing every note on the fretboard 'just like that' isn't very necessary as long as you understand in intervallic ideas. The fretboard will start looking like musical shapes and you'll just glide right through instead of having to think in terms of notes via reading sheet music.

Just buy a chromatic tuner, put it next to your amp/guitar and it will tell you what note you are hitting.

Just learn this pattern:

A BC D EF G

With the spaces before or after being a flat or a sharp. If you know your open strings, then use that pattern to find any note. After following the pattern for a week or so you'll learn the locations of the notes automatically...no need for fancy charts or gadgets.
