guitar effects question

On the S&M CD, in the intros to One and Nothing else Matters, and also in the interlude during MOP (the background guitar, not the solo one) the guitar has a "bright, hollow ringing" noise. It's hard to put in words but just listen to it and you'll know what I'm describing. What hardware do I need to duplicate that sound (obviously not perfectly, but just generally). Are they using a flanger? I'm not too familiar with guitar effects yet.

phaser maybe. probably in combination wiht a few effects. some of the time to get a hollow sound you can use a wah pedal at certain positions. I dont know what they do in those songs though. Its been a long time since i've heard their stuff.

I don't have the album to listen to, but from your description, I would guess Reverb. Reverb tends to brighten the sound and can have a hollow/delayed sound.

I don't think its a reverb, as my amp already has reverb and doesn't sound at all like that even when I turn it all the way up...

Yeah, I just recreated it with my GNX4. If you're talking about the fingerstyle part at the beginning of the song it's chorus (about 70% saturated my best guess) and a tad of reverb. I think it's played on an acoustic w/pickups too due to the sustain. It's a very good piece- I'm learning it myself.

Were you referring to NEM or one? Do they both use the chorus effect? Also they use the effect I am describing in pretty much every live recording of one and MOP I have listened to, not just on the S&M cd..

To duplicate Metallica's effects you need to wussify yourself over and over and complain about how people are stealing your "music" when everyone already knows you haven't made anything that resembles new music in 20 years. Then become confused with what length is appropriate for your hair and change it frequently hoping that no one will realize you're a self-esteem lacking tool.
