guitar amp and mic question

I just bought a guitar amp yesterday but I haven't bought the guitar yet. I thought I could at least verify the amp worked by plugging my pc microphone into the amp's input and it should pick up and amplify noise, but it didn't give off any sound at all. I realize that I am not using the amp the way it was intended to be used by doing that, but my question is why didn't it work? The microphone picks up vibrations and converts them to a weak electrical signal and passes it to the amp, which sounds very similar to how pickups work.

do you have an instrument cable? plug it into the input on the amp and touch the tip of the unplugged end without being grounded (without touching the metal sleeve of the rest of the plug). you should hear a 60Hz hum.

That should do it to atleast test if you have power, but not if the speaker is cracked or anything. GET YOUR PC MIC OUT OF THERE...sheesh...
