ahh Guinness what I like to call a coffee beer. Love the stuff, a few of my irish friends say American Guinness is crap compared to real Irish brew. I guess they serve diffrent stuff in Europe, is this true?

I was going to ask if its better in cans or bottles but now I'm not sure that I can take your advice man 😀 The bottle says serve well chilled, and I just looked at their website and they recommend a pretty good chill:
"Make sure your GUINNESS® Draught can has been chilled for at least 3 hours - preferably at 42.8 degrees" It was okay as it warmed but I think cold is gonna' be better.

I'll have to try their extra stout now too..........

EDIT: Almost forgot... Like any proper bar that serves Guiness, they pour it and then wait five minutes before they serve it to you for it to get slightly warmer and for the beer to change color. Good stuff.

Come to England they have Strongbow in pretty much every pub you go into.

Also, no matter what anyone says you haven't had a proper pint of guinness until you have had one in Ireland. No matter where you go it always tastes different to a proper Irish pint.

The brewery makes something like 39 different brews. So American Guinness is a different brew than the Guinness you get in Ireland.

Mmm.... Guinness... Mmm... Strongbow...

They also have Guinness Extra Cold (in addition to regular Guinness) on tap here in England. Soo good... And it's also true that the Guinness over here tastes a lot different than the Guinness back at home - it's a lot better here; I once heard from a bartender that there are more preservatives in the American brew.

Strongbow is definitely one good cider. But I was at the pub last weekend and had a bottle of Thatcher's cider - a lot more alcohol, about the same price (about 2.60 GBP as opposed to 2.40 GBP for other beers on tap) - and absolutely delicious.

 
Fresh proper Guinness... yum. It's too bad that a lot of times people don't get a decently fresh batch or have it properly served.
 
You guys bagging on the bottles, are you talking about the *NEW* bottles, or the *OLD WIDGETLESS* Bottles? B/c the new bottles have it all over the cans.

Oh, and it's supposed to be COLD. When they say that people in the UK drink their beer warm, they mean at the temperature it comes out of the cask, and since the cask is in the basement, it's still going to be colder than room temperature, which is NOT warm. I suppose this is similar to the misconception that red wine is supposed to be warm, as well.

I LOVE Guinness, but St Paulie Girl, on the other hand, tastes like feet.


A side note: while Guinness definitely tastes better on tap than in cans/bottles, they definitely do a good job with bottling it. The difference between tap and bottles isn't as big as it is with other beers, IMO.

Don't ever go to Ireland then... pub down the road from my house has an element just to keep the pint mugs for Guniness warm.... served warm at 17% defientely makes for one hell of a happy hour if you haven't had one before... I remeber going to the pub with me da at 16, and he ordered us both two.... I had both... and kept falling on me ass all night... needless to say... I've grown to love Guiness very much... 😀

 
Actually if you look at the label on the Guinness Extra Stout sold in bottles in the US it says it is brewed under license by Molsons in Canada. The only Guinness I have seen still imported from Ireland here is the pub draft in cans. I still love the stuff though. :beer:

Murphy's or Guinness is best drunk at room temp or about 55 degrees f. It tastes nasty to me either way but, no pub would offer cold draft guinness lest they be run outta Ireland to England or worse.... well I guess there ain't no worse... but... Powers in black coffee and Irish cream atop is well.... warming.
