In Friday's Fry's ad there is a Guillemont 3D Prophet Video Card, retail on sale for $169.99. Then there's a $20 rebate from Guillemont. I think it's a hot deal but not sure if the rest of you on the forum will find it hot. The Anaheim location still has tons of them (30 from what the guy told me).

The lowest price I can find this card on CNET for is $179 OEM. On pricewatch the best price I think is $125 brown box, there's one that $142 but I'm not sure if it is OEM or retail.

I tried pricematching it everywhere but no go. I saw it at CompUSA but they had it there for $249.

I know it's not DDR or geForce II but on my poor, starving college student budget, I think this is a great deal.

If its an SDR board, which it is, then the price is fair, but these prices are bound to take a major downward sprial with the release of the Geforce MX boards. They are FAR superior to the SDR boards.

I bought that same board from www.sg3d.com about a year ago for 180, so I dont think its quite the deal you believe it to be...sorry.

Also, I was disgusted with the poor performance of that board compared to my Creative Labs Geforce. PLUS 16mb of the memory went bad after I used it for about 3 weeks...

I would seriously reconsider buying that board UNLESS the unthinkable is happening and FRys is selling the DDR boards...

overhype, there's really not much difference between an SDR and an MX. Just like the difference between a vanta and a regular tnt, just an advertising gimmick. Overall performance wise, they're the same.

So should I return this card and wait for a decent MX board? I hear the prices are about $120 for one whereas this one is $149 after the rebate. Is there a major difference? *sigh* I can never keep up with videocards, everything else I'm pretty good at but not videocards (I just don't understand them).

well, you spent 169 and have to wait for god knows how long for the rebate...the mx boards retail at 119 so they'll probably sell for around a bill...i dunno...the sdr will be dead on a basis of resale value

The Geforce MX draws only 4W of power as compared the the 16W for the Prohhet Geforce. That would be a major plus as far as Im concerned.

Then it'll run cooler too, right. God know my computer system is as hot as a Sahara right now. My stupid Viper II card has no fan and I hope those Mx boards come with them, if not good thing it runs on less power.

Here's a better deal: preorder the Leadtek GF MX w/TwinView for $115. Check the thread NFS4, that speed-loving bastard, started.

datoefu,

Youve never really tried the higher resolutions have you?

Coupled with full AntiAliasing, you can see 20 - 30 fps differences...

that vanta BITES compared to a geforce, especially on games that support the higher resolutions.

Im sure that if you run youre games at 640, then you will be quite satisfied. But just TRY and run a game like ground control on a non-highend 3d board...

Sure, go ahead a buy a cheap card, if you want medium performance. Some people demand the fastest cards available to have games cranked on resolution and speed. If youre planning to play the latest and greatest games with 32bit at anything over 1024 then you should invest in the newer MX geforce boards.

Speaking from PERSONAL EXPERIENCE and not from REVIEWS, I have been extremely impressed with the MX boards. They match DDR performance and KILL KILL KILL the SDR at high resolution, especially on games like Need for Speed Porche.

I dont know about the rest of the crowd around here, but when I tested the MX boards, I fully agreed with what the press had been saying about that board.

If you are having heat problems in your case, a board with a built on fan is an absolute must. You could also spend 15 - 20 dollars and stick some case fans in there...

good luck!

hmmm, I see your point. Yet I cant help think: I have only one set of hands, and one computer at a time is good for me...:)

I remeber running at 800, until I got a P3 850 and a geforce 2, Now there is no point in running at anything under 1024... Sorry, I never get emliminated in the first round...We should meet up sometime... which clan do you belong to?

I suppose that a celery is nice for some folk, but to be honest I cant seem to find that many reasons to have daul. There are so few Symmetric Multiprocessing programs around that I would use (besides Photoshop, and a few Video rendering programs)

I still think that if a person wants to upgrade from a Viper II, There arent too many options besides the newer Geforces that make a real difference

I enjoyed headbanging with you. Sometimes I wonder if Im going overboard on my hardware. Its nice to see that a person can actually live with the kind of setup that you have...maybe one day I will give it a try and donate some money or something...:)

I do kinda spend too much time (an what little money I have) on my computer. The problem is I always wanted a geForce but settled for a Viper II. I was kinda working to one (saving here and there and selling old stuff as I go) I do sometime wonder why since I am not someone who plays games. I do love working on my computer so I think that's my problem... "Hello my name is Mysterie and I am a computer-upgradaholic" *grin*. Thanks for the advice, I guess I'm driving down to Fry's to return the little sucker.
