GoGamer is selling Guild Wars Platinum Edition for $15.

http://www.gogamer.com/Guild-W...Id444758VVviewprod.htm

Is this a good buy?

Was it a worthwhile game? How does it compare to WoW and Neverwinter Nights (online)?

Do people still play Guild Wars online?

If you guy the game do you have to buy a horde of expansion packs (how they were gonna make money since they don't charge a subscription)? Can you access the MMORPG server anytime as much as you want without paying a subscription fee?

!

Eye of the North normally runs at least $30 by itself! Original + EotN for $14.90 is a great deal.

The other two expansions (Factions, Nightfall) you can live without unless you're a hardcore GW fan. I still have only the original Prophecies campaign - each expansion just adds another campaign and more playable classes/areas.

Everything in guild wars is instanced except for the towns. You will never see people outside of your party in the world other than in the towns and PvP arenas.

I'm a sucker.

I picked it up. I don't know what it is about WAR but it got pretty old fast to me. But I imagine that Guild wars will not last long either (MY ADD is REEAAAL bad when it comes to games) but instead of renewing my WAR sub today for 15 bucks..I'll spend it on the plat pack and try it out...if it gives me a month of fun..then it was worth it.

I think you'll like it. There are several people here on the forums who have a guild and play from time to time. I'm not in their guild but I'm on almost everyday for a while. I'm going to bump the GW thread soon so if you have questions, feel free to ask or add me to your friend's list in-game. The list is in the other thread. :)

guild wars is cool, if your not looking for a super all around great MMO. it has the basic diablo-esk feel to it. but lacks in alot of places. i myself haev all the guid wars games...should have stopped after the first one.but yeah. that game itself is fun, but i felt it got boring fast. it is what it is. a pay once free MMO. you can essentially be 2 characters in one. you aggro everything. i guess they didnt grasp the concept behind higher level aggro. im still aggroing lvl mobs at lvl 12... now in guild wars the cap is mostly 20 until you get teh xpacs. running through each zone can be boring, when u consider you aggro anything and everything.. and they dont go away. usually in other mmo's after awhile you can shake the mobs. but noooo, they keep on coming.

but i digress :)

GWEN is the only expansion pack. Factions and Nightfall are completely stand alone, so you don't need Prophecies to play those. However, you do need one of the 3 main campaigns to play GWEN.

I've played it for more than 2 years now, and got my fun out of it. Don't play it so much anymore, but log in every now and again. IMO, Nightfall is the better of the campaigns when you consider skills and characters. Each has their benefits, of course.

I find it interesting that something called the "Platinum Edition" only includes one of the three expansions.

I remember the good old days when we had bronze, silver and gold credit cards. But people felt bad they couldnt have the best and since we're a nation of feel-good people the banks felt the need to change.
Now it seems like we only have Platinum credit cards, and they dont mean shit.

I guess video games are the same way.

I also dont care for every DVD being a collectors edition and every car being a limited edition.

/Rant.

This is still a darn good deal. Guild Wars is free to play so if you can get the games dirt cheap you are in good shape.

It's because the other two are not expansions. They're stand-alone campaigns. You don't need the original Prophecies to play Factions or Nightfall. Factions and Nightfall are stand-alone games in and of themselves. Eye of the North is the only actual expansion in that it provides new content for each of the three basic campaigns.

Sorry, I didnt know that.

I only go into my Guild Wars account one day a month.
One time I noticed they had a store built into the game itself. I browsed around and saw you could buy all those expansions one at a time or in bulk. They also had a bunch of little cheap add-ons for five to ten bucks.
I thought it was all connected in one huge world and the basic Guild Wars was the foundation for that world.

This is good news for me because after 3 years I still only have 2 level ten characters. I get bored trying to run around and discover new areas so I can quick travel to them later. And I seem to be getting so little experience lately that grinding away to level 20 is not very appetizing.

In Titan Quest (by contrast) I had three level 60 characters and two at level 30 after only a couple months of playing.
Seems single player games reward you faster and dont expect you to grind away for years on end.

For $15 Guild Wars is a very good buy. Just don't expect anything from it on WoW or D2 level... I played GW for 3 years straight since beta, but I eventually stopped playing because GW is a lot more focused on it's PvP aspect as opposed to PvE which is quite mediocre, compared to other games. What's worse, the PvP aspect is poorly integrated, making it very difficult for newbies to get any "serious" PvP going... Basically there are random arenas that are meant to "introduce" you to PvP, but these quickly get boring and you'll want to try something on a "higher level". Hero's Ascent is where it's all at... Ranks, fame, fortune, best items... All this can be obtained through HA. Unfortunately, many people quickly find out that unless you have dedicated, and devoted friends who will show up often to play on your team in HA, you wont get anywhere. It's very hard, and sometimes next to impossible to get a team going in HA with random people. Even harder to get a "winning" team going. A PvP game that makes it hard to get into PvP? I had enough... lol

That being said there is PLENTY of value in GW for $15. It will take you a while to fully explore the PvE aspect of the game, and you might even get into some basic PvP or GvG... Either way, you'll probably play for a long time, and enjoy this game, before you'll notice how mediocre it is when compared to EVE Online or WoW or even Titan Quest, (if it had it's own version of Battle.net)
