This is part of my ongoing GuideZilla tutorials for OS X. My last article was on how to manage your software collection. New topics will be posted at random intervals :)

This is Part 1 of a Backup series that I am writing on managing clones & backups on your Mac. This tutorial is specifically about cloning using SuperDuper! It covers the concepts of both cloning a drive or partition to another drive or partition, as well as cloning a drive or partition to a sparseimage file (similar to an ISO of a CD, but for a hard drive). Here's the link:

Part 2 will cover Time Machine, including retrieving files and migrating Time Machine backups to a new installation, and Part 3 will tie it all together with a Video Tutorial show you how to actually use the software for the purposes the concepts discussed.

Enjoy, and any feedback is most welcome :)

Convenient timing, I need to back up my laptop to my external drive. I use 10.3.9 -- will your plan work for that as well? I've used CarbonCopyCloner in the past and it's worked just fine for me. Is there an advantage to your method?

If you're comfortable with CarbonCopyCloner, then by all means use that - the concepts are the same. SuperDuper is more up-to-date and has an easier user interface and workflow, which is why I prefer using it. The latest version of SuperDuper requires 10.4 or later, but they do have an older release, version 1.5.5, for Jaguar users, and v.2.1.4 for Panther users available on their website.
