dumb kids. i knew how to clear temp files and history way before 14.

I have been watching the children at my local community college and overall I think modern kids are very ignorant of computers in general. They always need my help to do stuff I had to figure out on my own. I guess when you grew up in an era of figuring shit out you are just naturally better at it.
Seems like most of the professors are smarter than them too.
When I was in junior high I was always instructing the teachers on how to get shit done.

So are you a PC repair technician or a family guidance counselor? From your story it sounds like the latter.

Me: well, its either them or your husband since you didn't do it. I would ask your hubby if he did before talking to the kids though, also decide together how to approach it.

This is where you should have MYOFB. You're there to fix her computer, not to play Dr. Phil and give her help with managing her family.

Uhh isn't this a good way to get fired? I would consider that info none of my business and I certainly wouldn't tell them the malware came from porn sites unless they asked very specifically and then I would only say so in a round about sort of way.

This is all too common. Somehow I think that this person will be a repeat customer for this problem....if not with you then with some other repairperson.

One time I fixed a computer for a lady. Our conversation about it went something like this:

Me: your computer seems to be swarming with viruses and maleware, OS files have been modified and compromised, I believe it should be reformatted.
Her: yes, me and my husband were talking about it, we think it was from the kids going on facebook, we think we should ban them from using facebook anymore.
Me: Just one second
*opens up IE and looks at history*
I am pretty sure it was all the porn sites they were visiting actually.
Her: What? I have two teenaged daughters, they are only 14 and 11! they don't watch porn sites!
Me: well, its either them or your husband since you didn't do it. I would ask your hubby if he did before talking to the kids though, also decide together how to approach it.
Her: are you absolutely SURE it was porn sites?
Me: Well, let me check... ok I just clicked a few and they are definitely porn. Also with names like <insert obvious porn name> dot com...

About a week later I got a followup call, she wanted to clarify to me that they have talked about it and concluded the cause. A few weeks prior one of the girls had a classmate who was a boy over for a couple of hours, and he was left unsupervised in her room for a short while. They concluded he must have gotten on the computer in that interval to surf for porn. She wanted me (the random tech who fixed her computer) to know that neither her husband nor her teenaged daughters would ever visit a porn site...

My guess would be that the 14 year old was getting it on with said teenage boy, while watching the porn.

My money's on the wife.

Any man with a bit of common sense knows to clear the history folder. My wife, however, doesn't even know a history folder exists. I suspect most wives don't.

I'd prefer that they do know.

That way when they find nothing (private browsing), it's all good.
