Forget the Election coverage for a little while and check out the Heisman show tonight at 7:00 CST, in about 1 hr. on ESPN.

Bob Stoops won "Coach of the year" at the "Home Depot College Football Adwards Show". He also won the Munger Award for college coach of the year with 623 of 864 votes. Miami, Fl coach Butch Davies was 2nd with 64 votes.

Josh Heupel won the Associated Press player of the year with 30 of 82 votes. Chris Weinke got 17, Tomlinson got 9, Drew Brees got 8, and michael Vick got 5.

Chris Weinke won the O'brien award to the nation's outstanding quarterback.

The Maxwell award went to Drew Brees as the nation's top offensive player. (voting: 1,498 for Brees, 1,466 for Heupel)
The American Football Coaches Association named Heupel as 1st-team quarterback.

So who's going to win the Heisman?

Coach of the year is usually political. Drew Brees will win the Heisman.
But damn your sooners looked good!

Drew Brees: 39 for 64 and 455 yards. Brought his team back from the dead in the 4th Qtr.
But 4 Interceptions; that's not good.
Coach of the year is political. That's no good for Oklahoma. Remember how the media ripped the Sooners and Switzer in the 80's? They have long memories.

Nick,
Don't forget Brees did his work against a real good Ohio State Defense (Offense ain't so hot). He has his team in position to go to the Rose Bowl for the first time in 34 years. He passed up big NFL bucks to stay for his 4th year. I think he's a lock.
Don't count out Holtz at South Carolina and Bowden at Clemson for coach of the year.
No doubt that Oklahoma is the only "outstanding" team in college football. I am amazed that any team could beat Texas, K. State and Nebraska all in a row! WOW.
(Tell your boys not to look past a nasty defense at Texas A&M).

Peyton Manning did the exact same; stayed for the fourth year, led Tennessee to the Orange Bowl vs. Nebraska (who co-championed w/ Michigan that year), won the SEC Championship... He lost out to Woodson for the Heisman. I still haven't figured out why...

Bryan,
Manning was a political causalty. The Big Ten and Michigan toss around alot of weight. Just wait until the Vols have been a powerhouse for years and years (and they will be) and watch their hesiman count multiply. Ain't fair, I know.
Brees has everything going for him - it's his to lose. I wish I had money to put down on this at the Vegas Stardust.

i don't know about brees...he didn't look so good this whole season, he's had some nice games, but i'm gonna have to say the heisman is going to either weinke or heupel. weinke didn't have a great game yesterday, but his foot was bothering him alot more and he did put up over 1300 yds in the past 3 games previous. and heupel, leading his team past texas, k state and nebraska is hard to overlook

Hey, if we're gonna get our ass kicked, at least it was by the best around.

Josh Heupel of Oklahoma has completed 66 of 98 passes with 4TD's and 1 INT against teams ranked #11, #2, and #1; Texas, Kansas State and Nebraska in the last 3 games. He doesn't have the charismatic personality or the play making ability or a "Bret Farr" but he can audible into good plays when it counts. He won't ever be a star on Sunday but he will probably be one of the best coaches around before long. He has the knack for reading and understanding defenses. Remember that the Hiesman trophy is supposed to go to the best player this year; not the best player in his carreer.

Lou Holtz has done a remarkable job of turning around the South Carolina program but they have already lost 2 games and I don't think he will win coach of the year. Now Clemson has lost, so Bouden's star doesn't shine quite as bright.

Certainly the Sooners head coach. Lou Holtz and Tommy Bowden came to mind also. I'm a fan of neither team, but admire them both for the coaching.

Heisman Trophy: Heupel, Brees, maybe even Michael Vick. Doubt Vick would get it though.

National Championship: Oklahoma. Those boys are tough this year. Unless they step on it, they are a lock. If they do falter, then FSU, Nebraska or Miami. I think Virginia Tech is gonna lose to Miami.

Coach of the Year: Dennis Erickson, Oregon State. Talk about turning around a program. Before last year, the Beavers hadn't had a winning season since the 70's. Now, they could make the Rose Bowl and even crack the top 10 if they win out.

Heisman: Brees. QBs always have the edge, and there is no superstar at any other position this year who will unseat him. Heupel has a chance as well.

Championship: Obviously, they play for this one so it's harder to predict. There is a HUGE Miami-Va. Tech game next weekend, and the winner could get into the Orange Bowl. But who can figure out the BCS anyway? :)

Coach of the Year: Lou Holtz
Heisman Winner: Chris Weinke
National Champion: Florida State (need some help, but I think it will happen)

Big props to the Sooners though, they looked very impressive. And anytime someone knocks off the Huskers, I am a happy man.

Consider that in most years the "coach of the year" and "heisman" honors go to someone who has done an outstanding job for more than 1 year and it usually doesn't go to the guy who has done the most incredible job that year.
Consider the location of the main line media and how they tout their favorites (read NY, Chicago, LA).
Consider who votes. Remember the Manning/Woodson stir when Tennessee Titan "Eddie George" told how he used his vote to "stay loyal to the Big Ten"?
Pardon me, but if you use stats, or your "feelings" to judge these things, you are way out in left field. Keep historical performance in mind in when predicting the future.

My crystal ball sees:
Coach of the Year: Lou Holtz
Heisman Winner: Drew Brees
National Champion: Oklahoma (will have trouble beating Nebraska a second time, but will put a good lick on Miami in the title game).

What was Oregon State's record last year and the year before.? How long has Dennis Erickson been the coach.
Bob Stoops 1st year (last year) he was 7-5. The 2 years before that OU was 3-8 and 4-7.

Nick - OSU's records:
1996: 3-8, 0-8 conference
1997: 2-9, 1-7
1998: 5-6, 2-6
1999: 7-4, 4-4 - Oahu Bowl, first bowl since 1965. Erickson's first season.
2000: 7-1, 4-1 - so far! #14 in both polls and #11 in the BCS!

Some of the credit has to go to Mike Riley, who had started to turn the team around somewhat and obviously did some good recruiting before leaving for the NFL. But Erickson has clearly taken the Beavs to a new level in making them a legit threat to win the conference. The Civil War here in Oregon actually has some importance for both teams this year! :)

Oklahomans will see a familiar face on the cover of this week?s issue of Sports Illustrated. The magazine?s editors have chosen the Sooners over the New York Yankees for the latest cover. Either quarterback Josh Heupel or coach Bob Stoops could be on the cover.

It is the first time Oklahoma has been on the cover since 1989 when former quarterback Charles Thompson was pictured in handcuffs and orange prison coveralls.

The Sooners are featured after their 31-14 victory over Nebraska, which put them at the top of the polls and the Bowl Championship Series rankings.

The magazine should be at newstands Friday.

Back for a Florida recount. ;)
Rocky Mountain News survey still gives the edge to Heupel.
What do you think?
