kinda obvious if you have ever been to vietnam. Their "arcades" are like a lan center of playstations with burned games.

lol, there's an arcade in Little Saigon, at Phuc Loc Tho (forgot last part), the DDR arcade back there, burned games lol. DDR 3rd mix had Extreme.

I've been to China, in the city, there are boutiques on every street with boxes and boxes of pirated software and games. You can probably find any recent game you can think of, though some of them don't work very well or are unrleased betas and stuff.

and they are so cheap

WTF did you expect? it's not like the yankees are going to show up with M16s and start yelling IP all over the place. china would laugh them across the pacific.

I personally think its awsome that most of the world shits on intellectual property. Maybe the west (moreso the US than the rest of the west, though) will realize the uphill struggle and move towards open source. Not likely though, with a stubborn outdated business model.

Just walk through a market in those countries and you'll see pirated software CDs for a buck or less.

I think the software companies know there isn't a huge revenue base in poverty-stricken nations.

I do not justify piracy, however I do think that the fault is on the big software companies who fail to realize that not everyone can afford a $200 OS, and other software.
Unlike hardware, software can be sold at a much lower price without losing money on it. I think all will benefit from that, the customers will have fully functioning LEGAL software, and the companies will make much more money by penetrating those problematic markets.

Well they will lose money if it is sold at a affordable price in most developing countries, but yeah, the prices arei nsaine. $500 for a office suite? In china, when I was there, a authentic Gorillaz cd costs 200RMB(Ren Ming Bi). To most people, that's a day's worth of labor or more. Imagine every game yuo bought cost you $450-$600. Windows was 2000RMB and Office was like 4500RMB.

I'm surprised Pakistan is not on that list... China doesn't surprise me though ( since I saw tons of pirated cds in Hong Kong for a dollar each if I remember correctly )

I noticed that most of the Asian folks that I know don't even really consider piracy to be a crime. If they buy a bootleg software CD or DVD on the street for $5, they don't really care if it's a legal copy or not. They paid for it, so they "own" it now.

lolz

I also expected China to be #1...with people practically legally selling pirated software and CDs everywhere (on the streets, in malls, you name it) I'm surprised it's not higher.
