I always maintained that Apple is as buggy as PC/Windows combo, it just doesn't have enough market share to bring all the problems into light.

leopard runs quite nicely. i'm not sure tom's is a place that is going to give apple a fair review in any sort of way tho.

apple tv is a sort of sling box type device for the home entertainment center.

as far as being as buggy as windows? not even close. no first release is perfect, and apple isn't exempt from that. but compared to vista, i don't hear of too many people going back to tiger, and i certainly haven't heard an outcry to apple to keep supporting it so that users don't have to move to leopard.

Except that it is restricted like hell and pretty useless for the layman who doesnt care to be forced into modding it.

It's been nothing but problems on the macs in the comp lab I work at. We got six of them a month ago, two have been in for repair, and all of them randomly lose connection to the printers. Useless but pretty.

While Dailytech is hardly a great source, here is an example of what I am referring to:

I dislike that skinny, wannabe-hip pretentious bastard they have representing Apple in those Apple vs PC commercials

Particularly ironic given that the default PC icon when browsing a mixed network on a mac is displaying a BSOD.

Old news is old and that's a terrible article.

AFAIK, most of the blue screens were caused by a third-party app that screwed around with the kernel.

You could argue that pretty much any system crash is the result of the aftermarket. Even Windows 98 doesn't crash if you don't run any applications.

Part of developing a good OS is ensuring that sloppy third-party code can't crash it easily. And typically Macs have been good at that. The issues with their latest OS don't suddenly relegate them to the bottom of the barrel of software developers, but it is disappointing, and their response even more so. Clearly the IMAGE of making a solid OS became more important than its actual creation, so although the product itself isn't that bad, Apple isn't willing to admit to its faults.

I'm sure there's a number of ways an OS can trip over itself without third-party stuff. There be bugs in them thar hills.

All you have to do is plug a scanner in, ask Bill :p

I found this explaining the APE problem and I don't think that's Apple's fault. Maybe it could be more graceful but it depends how invasive the app is. How many eventualities can they be expected to cover?

Get ready to hear every Apple customer start spouting the same excuses to defend their OS that they've been hearing and ignoring from Windows users for years.

I've never liked Apple. Why not? Their PCs were honestly never that good. It's always trendy to buy Apple products for some reason, which is exactly why they aren't held to a very high standard.

You're all wrong, but I don't feel like writing out a real rebuttal to everyone's "points," so let's all just assume I regurgitated the usual Apple-fanboy-spiel (make it more eloquent and compelling than usual, just to give me the benefit of the doubt), and let's all go to sleep happy.

Their PCs are never that good? I've gone through a Compaq, HP, two Dells, two IBM, and a Sager laptop and the most solid laptop I've had was my Macbook Pro by far. It's pretty silly to say that their computers are not that good. You basically discredit yourself with that nonsense.

The build quality of the macbooks is really impressive. I'm not so sure about the rest of their lineup (limited use on my part), but I know that OSx has plenty of problems, just like any other operating system.
