Not familiar with the deer/road kill laws but the cop was going to ticket him for no tag? That's messed up.

Basically, they don't want idiots (IE - rednecks) trying to run over the animals to feed their family. Pretty much any huntable wild game of the larger size requires a tag. Deer, turkey, elk, etc.

I guess there are some that would try that. Watched a show where the cops put a fake deer in a field to catch hunters at night. One guy must have forgot his rifle because he drove his truck into the field and ran over the decoy. Quite funny. Got his truck confiscated, too.

Yeah, back when I hunted deer, I was standing in line at a Walmart to buy my license. A guy in line told a story dat went sumtin liek dis:

So I'ma driven dawn the road in mah pikup truckUH, and I dee dis deer gittin ready to crahs-dah road. I floored dat sucker and dat deer was ded was a mess of guts all over da road.

I just stood there. Um, yep. Some people are nuckin futz, or just plain stupid.

When you hit a game animal that you want to take home and eat you have to call the cops.

Cops come out, ensure the animal is dead (or kill it if wounded/suffering), they tag it and your legal.

Cop would not have written the dude a ticket for no tag unless he was a dick. In most cases (I have done this), call the cops after i got home with the deer in the truck. They come out, tag the deer, write a report and go on their way. Most places in my area wont process a deer without a kill tag on it so unless you butcher yourself, you dont have a choice.
