That's retarded. Pray the insurance company claim it totalled so you can buy a new car.

We're hoping it gets totaled too.. Edmunds dealer value is $23k which is just under 80%.

Hard to see in the photos, but the rear trunk floor was lifted a good 4-5". My GF and I got hit probably around 35mph (the driver said to the CHP they were going 70 right before hitting their brakes and hitting us).

Wow.. Curious of the details of the accident, that is a really hard hit.

We were stuck in traffic as the last car in the carpool lane. Cars in front of me, cars to the right were driving past and to the left is the center divide. See the van coming up fast in the rear view mirror and I'm just praying they stop before hitting us. They don't and we get rear ended. I had my foot jammed on the brake pedal and luckily, don't hit the car in front of me.

I don't see enough damage for it being totaled, there would have to be damage to the engine compartment or frame to even get close, I will say 3000.

It hit hard enough to wrinkle the C pillar. You don't just bondo that shit out and call it good.

They were ticketed, correct? If you had been on a motorcycle you would be dead. Glad you all were ok.

I have little patience for people who cause accidents like this.. Just blatantly not paying attention should be an aggressive ticket.

If that was just a dent, a good body guy could pull it out with a stud gun and a slide hammer.

But it's not...I'm betting you can see damage to the unibody with the car on a lift. I mean, it's all 'unibody,' but the structural rails built into the bottom are probably tweaked...

Here's to hoping they total it...if they don't, I'd probably try and sue the guy for the cost of a new car, since that's never going to be right again.

$8-10K

Needs to go on the rack and have the corner pulled out. That and new QP.

Edit: Damn, must be a total mess underneath.

That crumpled C-pillar tells me it's a LOT higher than most people would guess. I hope they total it.

You're not just pulling out dents here.....you are also replacing parts. I am saying the initial estimate is $15K but believe me when I say it will only go up once the body shop starts disassembling the car and finds more problems they couldn't see on the original inspection.

The insurance company won't total it unless the value of the repairs is greater than the value of the car. In this case, no. When my car got hit in a parking lot hit and run, it cost about $5000 to fix. Damage was pretty much the same, though my QP looked far worse and had to be replaced.

Take it to several different shops to get quotes. I spent years dealing with body shops and a lot of them deserve their reputation of being shady.

This is not exactly true. Most insurance companies total it if damage exceeds 75% of the value of the car. This may vary depending on state.

However, they also have to account for diminished value. In this case I would insist on it being totaled due to the fact that it's tough to sell a car with pillar damage like that.

Think they were ticketed. I didn't check when the CHP officer was writing as I was more concerned with my GF who was getting into an ambulance. I need to request the officer report next week.

ah that sucks man. nice car too.

It was. '09, fully loaded and I had the 45k service scheduled this Sat (bought car with discounted maintenance package).. :(

I checked Edmunds value (no idea what AAA uses). Edmund's CPO price was 26k and Edmund's dealer price at 23k so that'd be around 70-78%. Should hear back today if it will be totaled or not.

I would say it is totaled as well. Damage to the pillar, quarter panel, trunk floor, exhaust and who know what else until they take it all apart.

Its not a simple value thing either.

If there is a structural damage that is hard/impossible to fix to a like new state, no matter what the % of the car the damage is, they might total the car.

Why? they dont want the liability of paying for a half ass repair.
